alt.comp.os.windows-10: Drat, it's also NOT an EXE file. :-( No - the Guest Additions is an ISO, and the Extension Pack has the file extension "vbox-extpack", which is associated only with Virtualbox. I've never understood what the Extension Pack does, exactly, but it never seems to hurt anything, so I keep installing it. |

Hi Andy, Where it starts to eat you alive is when it starts downloading and installing new releases. As far as I can tell, it creates a copy of the iso like file it downloads for twice the space, then it rename the windows directory to windows.old and installs an entirely new windows directory. The time I tried to get rid of windows.old, I have to boot into a Linux Live CD to whack it. Also want to see if they are up to their usually trickery to avoid a local account. M$ is being tricky. For a personally owned computer. At the account sign up screen screen, select: "Or Create new account", "Sign up" (gray box) Then, "Connect my account Later" The normal, local account creation screen will then appear -T |

The policies differ, from one OS to the next, but the latest policy is: 1) Automatic removal of Windows.old after 30 days. Do an upgrade install, and 30 days later, if you haven't tended to it, Windows removes Windows.old itself. Obviously, this has pros and cons. 2) Windows.old is removed by Disk Cleanup, by ticking the appropriate box. In my case, right after 10074 upgrade installation (USB stick, setup.exe), I used "cleanmgr.exe" to get rid of it. The Disk Cleanup dialog indicated a saving of around 13GB. 3) While you can remove Windows.old with Linux, it's silly to do it that way when Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) has that capability. You might make the argument that you could remove it faster from Linux - but the test I did in 10074, it wasn't one of those 60 minute long deletion exercises. It completed in less time than that. By the time I booted a Linux CD, and tended to the matter, then booted back, I doubt I would have saved any time. There was a time, when Disk Cleanup was "such a clunker", I would have been tempted to use Linux. And modern systems (not the ones we're testing on here), will be using WIM-boot. For which the upgrade procedure, the "saved" file situation, will be different. I'm not aware of anyone here, doing Preview installs on a WIM-boot tablet, so information will be scarce. Microsoft knows they have to deal with a 32GB storage device, with user files on it, so space is limited. Paul |

There are currently two dialogs on the computer "Device Setup". The LAN LED is going crazy, and something is being downloaded. It's been running for a while. It turned out, the two weird looking icons, and rather large dialog boxes, were for the "dual heads" of the video card. One large driver package should be downloaded, then used twice (once per head), to load the video driver. I suppose Microsoft was using this as a test case of automated driver updating. My video card was ATI HD6450 (el cheapo video). Paul |

My use of tools differs from that of a standard user. So, some of the things I do may seem a bit odd to you. I haven't had the best of luck at times with Disk Cleanup. But, usually when that happens, a lot of other things are wrong too. And bear in mind, I tend to look for trouble with the previews so I can learn how to cope with them. And I only get called to customer sites after they have given up trying to fix it themselves. On my virtual machine, it is so ridiculously easy to mount a Live CD's ISO. And, they boot in a blink of an eye. Plus, it is good practice, as I use Live CD's/USB's all the time in the field to rescue Windows machines. I once used a Bart PE disk to rescue Linux. Had a good chuckle over that! (Bart PE and W7 PE take so long to boot, they drive me nuts! But they definitely have their uses.) Sometimes when I am doing a network project, I will boot my Live USB just because Linux has all the cool network goodies and it reduces the frustration factor by about 80%. (I have a tricked out Live USB with all my favorite tools and their documentation.) Plus, I also do other things, such as the cleanup of temp files while I am at it, as the file locks are all inactive. And, well, it is fun. As for Disk Cleanup, I usually do it manually. (The user has typically already tried that avenue.) I especially go after the Temp directories manually because I want to see who has what locked. It is a favorite hiding place for malware/junkware. (If I can't unlock them, in comes Live CD/USB.) -T You got to wait 30 days? :'( |

I install it because it lets me choose selected USB2 devices on the host and let the VM see them as if they were plugged in to the VM directly. I have this location bookmarked: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ Normally, when you upgrade Virtualbox, it will offer to download the guest additions, but I've found that sometimes it doesn't. I will always have already downloaded them. Also the Extension Pack. Ths newsgroup is for stuff about windows 10 |
