There is no reason to believe that XP Pro will fix
the problem with Explorer on your XP Home computer.

I would check 'Device Manager', the Event logs,
run the Check Disk utility. Also are you running
XP SP3 or an earlier version.

Depending on the version of Pro, you may be able to over install it but it's
unlikely to fix problems. Besides what JS recommended, have you run scans
with up to date malware and antivirus programs?

There are two questions he

1. Can you upgrade from XP Home to XP Professional?

Yes, you can. However note that you need a retail copy (Full or
Upgrade) of XP Professional to do any upgrade. An OEM copy will not
work.

2. Is upgrading from Home to Professional a good approach to trying to
solve your freezing/shutting down problems?

No, it's not. It's highly unlikely that upgrading will solve the
problem, and it may very well make the problem worse. The one time I
always recommend *against* doing an upgrade is when you are
experiencing problems.

you might want to examine the
performance of windows via the
safe modes.
