Want to change back to XP from VISTA
I have a pc that I want to reinstall my copy of Win XP. When I insert my XP
disk, it and I tell it to install acopy of XP, it says I can't because I have a newer version of Windows. Tells me to "check for solutions on online" and I do not have internet access on that pc. How do I get rid of Vista so I can reinstall my copy of XP? I DO NOT want Vista......................... |

Want to change back to XP from VISTA

wrote: I have a pc that I want to reinstall my copy of Win XP. See below, but first of all, why do you want to do this? In my view, it's usually a mistake. With a modicum of care, it should never be necessary to reinstall Windows (XP or any other version). I've run Windows 3.0, 3.1, WFWG 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and now Windows 7, each for the period of time before the next version came out, and each on two or more machines here. I never reinstalled any of them, and I have never had anything more than an occasional minor problem. It's my belief that this mistaken notion stems from the technical support people at many of the larger OEMs. Their solution to almost any problem they don't quickly know the answer to is "reformat and reinstall." That's the perfect solution for them. It gets you off the phone quickly, it almost always works, and it doesn't require them to do any real troubleshooting (a skill that most of them obviously don't possess in any great degree). But it leaves you with all the work and all the problems. You have to restore all your data backups, you have to reinstall all your programs, you have to reinstall all the Windows and application updates, you have to locate and install all the needed drivers for your system, you have to recustomize Windows and all your apps to work the way you're comfortable with. Besides all those things being time-consuming and troublesome, you may have trouble with some of them: can you find all your application CDs? Can you find all the needed installation codes? Do you have data backups to restore? Do you even remember all the customizations and tweaks you may have installed to make everything work the way you like? Occasionally there are problems that are so difficult to solve that Windows should be reinstalled cleanly. But they are few and far between; reinstallation should not be a substitute for troubleshooting; it should be a last resort, to be done only after all other attempts at troubleshooting by a qualified person have failed. And perhaps most important: if you reformat and reinstall without finding out what caused your problem, you will very likely repeat the behavior that caused it, and quickly find yourself back in exactly the same situation. If you have problems, post the details of them here; it's likely that someone can help you and a reinstallation won't be required. When I insert my XP disk, it and I tell it to install acopy of XP, it says I can't because I have a newer version of Windows. Tells me to "check for solutions on online" and I do not have internet access on that pc. How do I get rid of Vista so I can reinstall my copy of XP? I DO NOT want Vista......................... Two points: 1. The reason you get the message is that you have installed a service pack that the CD doesn't have. 2. It doesn't matter whether you've installed the service pack, because you are doing the reinstallation incorrectly. If you do it correctly, it begins by formatting the drive and whatever is on it to begin with doesn't matter. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one). You can find detailed instructions he http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html or here http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...windows_xp.htm or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

Want to change back to XP from VISTA
The only way to replace Vista with XP is to erase your hard disk and do
a clean install of XP (and all the rest of your software.) But wait...are you sure that XP has drivers for your hardware? And do you have installation media for all your other software. You'll also need your license keys. My opinion: It's not worth the trouble. If you hate Vista that much - join the crowd - Windows 7 is just around the corner. Better to go forwards than backwards. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est JackMan wrote: I have a pc that I want to reinstall my copy of Win XP. But did you understand the full implications of the wish, obviously not,
otherwise you wouldn't have posted an inane comment "Bennett Marco" wrote in message ... yes to reinstall xp, you would have to
format the harddisk in order to remove all files that belong to vista. it is the only method to downgrade. -- db·´¯`·...¸)))º DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @Hotmail.com "share the nirvana mann" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "JackMan" wrote in message ... Do a "clean install". http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operat...stxpclean1.htm http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html Both links have excellent instructions. Boot from the CD. Make the first thing you do, as will be first thing offered, delete and then recreate the paritions. There will be NO operating system there. Continue and follow the prompts. HTH, Twayne` |

You're trying to do this from within Windows, and you can't do that. You have to reboot with the XP CD - and you must be SURE that you have all the XP drivers to hand - and then you have to *at least* format the drive. You can't install over Vista, you must wipe the drive. This of course also means that your data must be backed up off that hard disk, very preferably one that is NOT connected to the system.
