Default Corrupted Registry

When I try to start up my computer I get the message: Windows XP could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. It also asks me to insert original cd in
order to attemp repair. I purchased my computer from a company that is now
out of business and that did not give me a copy of the windows software they
installed. Will I have to purchase Windows XP Software again or is there
another way to recover my system?
