Default Windows Installer "preparing to install' too often

Everytime I open a new window, whether it be a *.doc, *.xls, or an IE window
or Outlook express,or even a file folder, Windows installer runs for a few
seconds. I am afraid it may be creating registry entries or something during
this time. It was worse, where It waited for me to cancel a few times. Then
I 'restored' to Ocober 31st and this is the way it acts now. Anyone know
where I should look (msconfig?) for a command that acts before these types of
windows open? It couldn't be in the front of all these programs
individually. Any ideas at all?

Do you have Norton IS running? The reason I ask is that I do and I have also experienced this "installer" behaviour. It takes several hits on the "close" button to stop. Does it give any hint as to WHAT it want's to install? By removing Norton IS, this problem was gone. I still have not found out the entire cause but re-installed Norton and registered it.

hi, i too get this problem (I hate Norton) . try this link that I found when
searching for an answer. I have not been able to try it yet since I have been
dealing with other pc problems unrelated to this. Hope it helps.

I have a similar problem. When I click on the desktop icons for either
Cakewalk Pyro Plus or Registry Mechanic, the Windows Installer "preparing..."
dialog box pops up momentarily and then quickly disappears.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the two apps, without any luck.

I've searched the Registry for any relevant Installer entries, without any
luck.

Any help, please?
