Default SP2 Laptop PCMCIA USB Adapter Lockup

I'm using a Compaq Armada E500 Laptop with a Belkin PCMCIA USB 2.0 Adapter,
and a 3Com 11g USB Wireless LAN Adapter.
After installing WinXP SP2, I get irregular lockups of the UI: Keyboard,
mouse and display freeze.
Disconnecting the Wireless adapter does not help.
Ejecting the PCMCIA card brings Windows back to life.
If I wait long enough Windows will beep, signalling that hardware has been
disconnected. It is then safe to re-insert both adapters, and wait for the
next lockup.
Has anybody seen behaviour like this, and is there another solution besides
uninstalling the Service Pack?
