Default Win XP Home Sutdown or Restart

Win XP Home (SP3) will sometimes not restart or shutdown. If I power down
and start, it boots up OK and all is working, as far as I can see.
Thanks, brett.

Try loading BIOS settings to defaults. Sometimes it solves Shutdown and
Restart problems.

Let us know!

Thanks Gerry and Noel, I'm still reeling from trying to absorb the 'UPHClean

Thanks also to Rajiv, but how does one re-load BIOS settings to defaults and
is there a fail safe please?

The important thing to do is to install User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service. The Read Me notes are included in my post for those who like to
know more about the software being recommended. It is not essential
reading. The software can cure problems but it is not a cure all. It is
a place to start.

After installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service if you still have
problems look in the System and Application logs of Event Viewer and
post copies of any Error or Warning Report appearing after an attempt to
restart. Please note all Reports have a date and time to help you relate
to what has happened on screen previously.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You right click on the Report in the list and select Properties. In the
window, which appears are three buttons towards the top right of the
window. The top
one has an arrow up, underneath is an arrow down and third is a button

Gerry,

I installed the Hive Cleanup Service and it seemed to clear things with no
problems, thanks.

Can now see the way to send copies of entries from the event viewer, thanks.
On looking I have a number of errors showing in the system list, but not
sure how to identify them for what they report. Can I paste them into an MS
site and get 'decodes'/answers ? Would save cluttering up NGs.

You will get better answers posting here. Only Errors and Warnings in the
System and Application logs are really of interest. Also ignore any
occuring more than 48 hours ago. A single error also may not be worth
investigating. It is repeating errors that indicate a real problem. Remember
that one error will often lead to another so it is important to examine the
sequence of errors. Many errors are resolved by restaring the computer!

A useful resource is http://www.eventid.net/ . Some services require you to
subscribe but the important comments do not. It does not have ansers to many
errors but it is the best site I know of.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close
Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the
body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks also to Rajiv, but how does one re-load BIOS settings to
defaults and is there a fail safe please?

Try loading BIOS settings to defaults. Sometimes it solves Shutdown
and Restart problems.

Let us know!

Win XP Home (SP3) will sometimes not restart or shutdown. If I
power down and start, it boots up OK and all is working, as far as
I can see. Thanks, brett.

You will get better answers posting here. Only Errors and Warnings in the
System and Application logs are really of interest. Also ignore any
occuring more than 48 hours ago. A single error also may not be worth
investigating. It is repeating errors that indicate a real problem.
Remember that one error will often lead to another so it is important to
examine the sequence of errors. Many errors are resolved by restaring the
computer!

A useful resource is http://www.eventid.net/ . Some services require you
to subscribe but the important comments do not. It does not have ansers
to many errors but it is the best site I know of.

Gerry,

I installed the Hive Cleanup Service and it seemed to clear things with
no problems, thanks.

Can now see the way to send copies of entries from the event viewer,
thanks. On looking I have a number of errors showing in the system list,
but not sure how to identify them for what they report. Can I paste
them into an MS site and get 'decodes'/answers ? Would save cluttering
up NGs.

You right click on the Report in the list and select Properties. In the
window, which appears are three buttons towards the top right of the
window. The top
one has an arrow up, underneath is an arrow down and third is a button
resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. It is
not obvious but this action places a copy of the button in your
Clipboard. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body
of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

The important thing to do is to install User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service. The Read Me notes are included in my post for those who
like to know more about the software being recommended. It is not
essential reading. The software can cure problems but it is not a
cure all. It is a place to start.

After installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service if you still
have problems look in the System and Application logs of Event
Viewer and post copies of any Error or Warning Report appearing
after an attempt to restart. Please note all Reports have a date and
time to help you relate to what has happened on screen previously.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.
