Default Key board and mouse suddenly died - can't do anything!

Hi
My mouse and keyboard suddenly stopped working, while in use. They
connect by ps/2. Running updated XP with sp2. Been using them for at
least 2 years.
When I try to boot up I get to the 2nd b/w screen, there is a rapid
clicking noise from the tower, screen blacks out, lights on keyboard
flash for 1 second and that's it!
Before I get to buying a new keyboard etc. Could it be motherboard
problem or even a virus?
If I try loading a cd or floppy utility disc, windows loads up but
there is a loud beeping (no keyboard connected) sound.
Any help appreciated.
Ron

Sounds very much like a hardware problem, hence a hardware
newsgroup would be the right place to ask your question.
