Default Startup folder "duality"

I have a couple of problems I can't seem to figure out...

1... Any shortcut I put in the "All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup" folder get executed twice at logon

2... The "Start\All Programs" menu only shows files and
folders in the "All Users\Start Menu\Programs" folder, and
not the ones in the "Username\Start Menu\Programs" folder.

I know this second one is because "personalized start
menu" is not enabled, but I can't enable it! It doesn't
appear anywhere on the "Taskbar and start menu" properties
dialog, or on any of the "Advanced" settings dialogs. I
found one setting in the registry who's text was "enable
personalized start menu", and I set the value of
the "Defaultvalue" item to 1, the same as the value of
the "Checkedvalue" item, rebooted, and lo and behold, ONE
of the users of this computer is able to access his own
start menu items as well as the "All Users" start
menu....there are no other items matching the relevant key
in the registry, so I can't enable the "personalized start
menu" for the other three users of this machine (myself
included)

I bet this is a really quick, simple and obvious fix, and
someone's gonna make me look really stupid....aren't they?

Regarding "1... Any shortcut I put in the "All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup" folder get executed twice at logon"

Is it possible that the program has placed itself in the registry as a
program to be started? If so, your placing it in the Startup folder will
cause it to start twice. Delete the shortcut from the Startup folder and see
if it still starts up on boot.

By the way, there is a great freeway called the JV16 Power Tools which might
be very helpful for you. You can find it a http://www.jv16.org . Among other
things, it will allow you to determine if something will start at boot, and
where the startup information is stored. If it starts as a registry command,
it will show that, and if it starts from the Startup folder, it will show
that. And it gives you the choice as to remove it from startup or not. Take
a look if you haven't already done so.

You've been dragging folders about haven't you.

Type regedit in start run

navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User=
Shell Folders

and make sure startup is equal to this.
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

then go

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shel=
l Folders

and make sure startup is equal to
D:\Documents and Settings\David Candy\Start Menu\Programs\Startup =
(adjust the path for your computer)

XP uses User Shell Folder (and XP programs ask XP where is it), non XP =
programs read the registry at Shell Folders (so must be a proper path). =
They must resolve to the same path if you want to avoid future problems.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not it - it happens to
ANY item I put in the all users startup folder - even a
text file.

Hmmm, so moving folders out of the start menu folder from
one user to another affects the registry settings? Didn't
know that, but I'll bear it in mind in future!

I'll check all the shell folder keys at some point today -
I'm at work at the moment trying to take control of my
computer at home with "remote desktop connection" - it
won't get thru our company firewall though. Ah well, back
to the drawing board.

Thanks for the reply
