Ok, since I can't get Search to work in my W7 Ultimate. and I still
want to use some W7 functions such as MSCONFIG and REMOVE PROGRAMS,
etc - how do I do it?

I used to simply enter what I want in the Search Box, hit enter, and
voila, I could choose what I am seeking from the search results. Now
W7 just sits there looking at me.

I have tried rebuilding the index in indexing options, but that just
hangs and does nothing.

If I want to go to System Configuration Utility, is my only choice to
find and execute MSCONFIG.EXE directly? Then how do I uninstall a
program?

I'll betcha if I reinstall W7 fresh, the search will work again, huh?
That would be some work.

Aw geez.

Big Fred

MSCONFIG is to stop prog from running at boot, NOT used to uninstall
them.
UNINSTALL is Prog&Feat in control panel

Yes I know - I 'm sorry I confused my English. I know the difference
between MSCONFIG and UNINSTALL PROGRAMS. I really want to do both
functions as well as others. I have created a desktop shortcut to
msconfig.exe that works. But can't find a way to do the same to select
a list of installed programs from which to do an uninstall. Still this
is a shame to have to do just because the 'search' no longer works.

To other respondant - Yes, I have tried just about all of the
suggestions posted for this problem found by Googling the topic 'search
failing'. None work for me. I'm tired.

Thanks

Big Fred

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but shouldn't you be using the "Run
Command" instead of search for the misconfig and regedit commands? If you
aren't seeing the Run command in the start menu, go to the Control Panel,
then Taskbar, then Customize start menu and make sure that the box for Run
Command is checked. Once that is done, the Run Command will show up in
the start menu.

Aha - it wasn't checked. Now I can run MSCONFIG as I did in XP. Now how
do I bring up the list of installed apps from which I can do an uninstall -
like I did in XP?

Thanks

Big Fred

All of your installed programs can be found in the Control Panel under
"Programs & Features" Make sure that the "view" for your Control Panel (off
to the right side) is large or small icons. For some reason any other views
don't show all that is available in the Control Panel

Thanks. At least this works, and it makes me more comfortable in this
area. I will use that.

There are several such programs. Classic Shell is just one of them.
It's good, but in my view, it's not the best; Start8 is even better.
Unlike Classic Shell, Start8 isn't free, but it's inexpensive enough
($5) that it's close enough to free for me.

Hi, Camellia.

Make sure that the "view" for your Control Panel (off to the right side)
is large or small icons. For some reason any other views don't show all
that is available in the Control Panel

In Win8.1, the Details view shows all of the installed programs, along with
the Size, the Version and other useful information. As I recall, the View
options and display were the same in Win7.

I thought "Classicshell" and similar utilities were for Windows 8.

You're right, but your understanding is a tiny bit incomplete. The website
for Classic Shell says:

What are the system requirements of Classic Shell?
Classic Shell supports Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server
2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. There is only one
installer for all and it covers both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.
Not all features are supported for all versions of Windows.
