Default How to enable "hibernate" choice at shut down.

When I go to "start" and "turn off computer" I only get three choices in
the "turn off computer box". They are from left to right "standby",
"turn off" and "restart". How do I enable "hibernate" as one of my choices?

My computer says that I can enable hibernation in my "power options" and
I have ticked the box accordingly.

Also I cannot configure my sleep button to work since it is a Logitech
Internet Keyboard in which the sleep button does not work under Windows
XP but I would like to allow my computer to go into hibernation nevertheless

Asus P4T-E, 512 megs RDRAM, Windows XP Pro.

When the choices appear, press the Shift Key. What used to be
Standby will be Hibernate.

Do I need a PS2 keyboard to wake it up from Hibernation or will a USB
keyboard do? If it does not work with a USB keyboard what additional
setting in the BIOS must I look at?

You don't wake the system from Hibernation, you boot. Hibernation allows
you to shut the system down without closing your applications, allowing you
to start from wherever you left off before shutting down. Standby would be
the equivalent of putting the system to sleep and the system should come out
of standby mode with the motion of the mouse or the keyboard regardless of
whether they are PS2 or USB. With regard to any sleep function key that
might be on your keyboard, the functionality would have to be enabled in the
device drivers and those are the responsibility of the manufacturer so I
suggest you check the keyboard manufacturer's website for the latest XP
compatible drivers or software.

Well Micheal, I also have an very new Asus A8N-SLI and when I put it in
hibernate I simply touch any key on the keyboard when I need the
computer and after about 20 seconds I have the desktop. When I hit the
sleep button, which I have configured for hibernate, the computer
clearly goes to the hibernate screen before shutting down.

The A8N is in an Antec Sonata which has two bright blue LEDs and these
are clearly off when it is in hibernation so the machine is effectively
"off". There is NO flashing power light! When I hit any key the lights
flash on the computer wakes up, goes into its restore state and once to
the desktop it is exactly where I left off.

What does that sound like to you, hibernate or standby? To me this is
not standby.

I believe it has to be a PS/2, the jumper on the motherboard that controls
that power-on feature affects only that port.

Hi Michael,

Asus' newer boards have a jumper that will allow a user to initiate power-on
by using the keyboard.

Well, now that you clarify, it's hibernate. However, this information did
not appear in your initial post. That said, this is a new feature which
most users don't yet have, the ability to power on by the touch of the
keyboard. This is a peer to peer newsgroup and at the very least, the
information I provided was a clarification of the difference between Standby
which might also be construed as "sleep" and Hibernation for the benefit of
other users as well as yourself at least under the parameters of the
information you initially posted.

Also, in your initial post, you said the sleep button did not work under
Windows XP, now you are saying you've configured the button to put the
system in hibernation.

My response was based entirely on the information you initially provided, I
apologize for any confusion.

Hi Michael,

It will power-on from either hibernate or a full shutdown with this feature
enabled. The jumper is disabled by default, but it's an easy one to locate
and enable (usually right behind the PS/2 port), and is well documented in
their manuals. I only recently discovered this myself when I picked up a new
board for a system build (and actually paused to read parts of the manual,
not something I normally do).

Thanks, Ron, it's good to know it can be enabled in the BIOS as well, at
least for your board, though, I am wondering if the board has to be properly
jumpered in order for this choice to appear. If yes, perhaps your board
came with the proper jumper setting by default.
