Lost my D Drive
I was doing a disk cleanup on my extra drive (I have a c drive and an
independent D drive) and when I went in and compressed my D drive I lost my D drive, in other words it doesn't show up. I had all my pics, fonts, tags, etc. on it, how do I make it show up on "My Computer"? Please say I didn't loose it all! Regards ImASweetP Senior Citizen |

Let's clarify some information so someone has a better shot at helping you.
Do you have one physical hard drive or two drives? You can have two partitions on one hard drive so the distinction is important. If two drives, did you check control panel, system, hardware, device manager, disk drives or look in the BIOS to see if the second drive is reflected there? Was the D: partition an NTFS partition? If so, did you use a WinXP method of compression and if so, which one did you use? I have never been a fan of compressing files. It is OK until something goes wrong and then you scramble like mad trying to save the day. Considering the cost of hard drives, if you are short on drive space, get a larger drive. If money is a concern, place your files on CDs (or some device) and then delete the files from the drive. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "ImASweetP" wrote in message ... I agree. Not only that, but pictures (jpeg) and movies don't compress much
anyway, so the space savings will be minimal. Better to get a bigger drive. That said, go into the Disk Manager (right click on My Computer and choose Manage) and try to find and mount your drive from there. "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... Please have patience with me...
I have two(2) physical hard drives listed.... in my Disk drives (Maxtor 6E040L0 and Samsung SV 4002H) . I have rebooted and it still doesn't show up in My computer. I now know it is there right? How do I access it. Many thanx Jeneen "Ron Badour" wrote: Let's clarify some information so someone has a better shot at helping you. Do you have one physical hard drive or two drives? Reboot the computer and open bios setup. In bios setup, check whether or not Drive D is seen by the computer. It should be identified by its name (e.g., Maxtor or Samsung...only you know which is the Master and Slave). If the drive is listed in bios setup, then verify that it is set up for "Autodetect". If changes were made in bios setup, then save them and let the computer continue its reboot. With good luck, the Drive may re-appear in My Computer without any more work involved. This does not mean that the files are recoverable, however, although there are software utilities available for this purpose. If the drive is not listed in bios setup, then it is essentially "lost". Or, in other words, the drive has broken. Recovering any data from it will probably require professional work and money. If the drive is listed but files cannot be recovered, then back to Ron Badour's post. But why compress the drive? Changing the native format of any drive is always an invitation to disaster unless one already has an uncompressed backup of the drive's important files stored away somewhere. Let this be a lesson. Good luck and good hunting! |

Hi Jeneen
Patience is one thing we are long on here :-) When you provide information, be sure that you have answered all questions asked of you. I am going to assume that you used NTFS compression and that you compressed the whole drive. In that I have never done this, I consulted a MS manual on WinXP and it says that it could take several hours for the compression to complete. Has your computer been running so the operation could complete? I don't know if this would make the drive disappear from My Computer but I could not find anything else that seemed to fit the circumstances. Let's see if someone else comes up with any ideas. There are data recovery programs available but you are not at that point yet. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "ImASweetP" wrote in message ... Please have patience with me... Lost my D Drive
I just went into my system folder in the control panel, now I don't have the
Maxtor listed at all?????????? I did go into the bios and it says that the Maxtor is there tho so I put it on (Auto) and rebooted and XP did not load, but it says the slave drive was not working. Now what? I hope I can solve this myself as these puter places in "smallsville USA" charge an arm and a leg and then some! P.S. When I reboot it says "Primary slave drive failed" so I went into bios
and under Maxtor put instead of auto I put none and now windows loads. Given that development, I think the first thing to check is to see if the
hard drive has failed. Maxtor has diagnostic software that you can download from its web site. It installs on a floppy disk which is inserted in the drive and you reboot. In the BIOS, the first boot device needs to be set to the floppy drive. Running this program will tell you the health of your drive. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "ImASweetP" wrote in message ... Ran the diagnostic software I got on the web and I think the drive is
probably gone. I'm taking the puter in to get it running faster anyway tomorrow and will have them check the D drive too. Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software a very useful tool to recover the lost data even when the hard drive is not accessible. Stellar Phoenix a FAT & NTFS Partition File recovery Utility that examines your inaccessible hard drives for damages and corruptions and recovers the data back. Download the demo:http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm, scan your hard drive and if the scan result shows you the data then get the full version to save it.
