What is a good alternative to iTunes on Windows XP?

I'm old school and can't stand everything there is to say about iTunes so,
I just want an iTunes alternative for Windows that works for iOS as well as
sharepod worked for my iPods years ago.

With SharePod, I just connected any number of iPods to any number of
Windows machines and I could move files back and forth between the iPods
and/or the Windows machines.

I just want the same thing for iOS devices, namely my iPads.

I don't want to "sync" anything (I don't even know what Apple means by
"sync"). I just want to copy files back and forth at will.

For example, for music MP3 files, the absolute last thing I want is this
crazy concept of a Master Library that must exist on Windows for it to also
exist on the iOS device. That's nuts. What I just want is for any number of
songs to exist on any number of computers where I can copy them back and
forth to any number of iOS devices, just like I did with iPods using
SharePod.

For copying files such as GPX & KML tracks, videos and subtitle files, text
files such as shopping lists, pictures, etc., what is the best free
software to use for Windows?

I could not get a good replacement for iTunes years ago for iPhone 4S.
Many programs seem to require iTunes to install to use third parties.
Apple has this controlled deeply. Note that iTunes comes with their
Apple drivers for iDevices.
