How important is net frame 3.5?
I simply can't get these windows updates (3) to install short of a
reinstall. These are referenced to code 80073712. I've been searching and tried what has seemed to work for others but no in my case. Windows 7 and Windows Vista To resolve this problem in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, use one of the following methods. For these methods to work, you must be logged on to your computer as an administrator. Or, you must be able to supply a user account name and password for an account that has administrative permissions. If you are using your home computer, you may already be logged on as an administrator. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310 Method 1:Run the Windows Update troubleshooter Method 2: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe) Method 3: Install the latest service pack for your version of Windows. Method 4: Run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool with the sfc /scannow command Method 5: Perform an in-place upgrade SFC found and fixed some errors but reported not all. It refers to CBS.log file but no way can I understand this file. The it sends me to: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus Like I might actually get a response. I'm not about to do any kind of reinstall as everything is finally working fine except this issue. That's why I ask if this update is something I will ever use or need. I have other win 7 systems this doesn't happen to so what possibly could be different on this one? Thanks to anyone that can offer me a clue. Al |

Installing a program that was written with it, will tell you if it can't find it. I had a program that required 1.1 on Win 7. Now that was a bitch to find out how to install. You could look in control panel, programs and features, "Turn windows features on or off "to see if 3.5 is installed and turned on. KenW It says it's turned on but I can assume it's not installed I guess. I turned it off but the updates still try to install. I know there's a way to hide them but I can't seem to find it. Do you know anything about that feature? Thanks. Al |

He makes a .NET cleanup tool and a .NET verifier. The cleanup tool can be used to remove .NET (in preparation for a re-install). The verifier can be used to verify that an installation is working properly. Basically, the verifier runs a small program that uses .NET library, as a means of determining whether the library files are ready to go. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/arc...8/8904493.aspx While the page is dated 2008, it is regularly updated. The tool currently supports 4.5.1 for example. You look on his Skydrive page, look at the files offered, check the dates, to get some idea whether you've got the "best" file or not. http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive...px/Blog_Tools/ The link will change itself to this. Try dotnetfx_cleanup_tool link in the third row. https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=27e6a...5D1A492AF7!376 Further down that page, you can find netfx_setupverifier_new download. " The cleanup tool contains logic so that if it is run on an OS version that includes the .NET Framework as an OS component, it will not offer the option to clean it up. Control Panel Programs and Features Turn Windows features on or off IF the box next to .NET Framework 3.5 is blue it's On. No matter if the boxes below are checked or not. Uncheck it if it's On. Then download and save the appropriate version of the System Update Readiness (x86, 32 bit, or x64, 64 bit) that matches your system's architecture. Ensure that checksur is not being Blocked by right clicking it, then check it's Properties. Configure the system to boot to a Clean State http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 then run checksur while the system is connected to the internet. It will download .cab files and, hopefully, replace missing/corrupt components of the OS. *NOTE* if a 3rd party firewall was being used, ensure that the native Win 7 firewall is now On as said 3rd party firewall is *OFF* in the Clean Boot state. Restart the system to Normal Windows mode after checksur has run, turn on .NET Framework 3.5 in Programs and Features ( unless you know otherwise, leave the 2 boxes under it *unchecked* ), and then see if the troublesome updates install now. If no joy you'll either need to do an "in-place upgrade" ( aka Repair Installation ) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 or do a clean installation of Win 7 to resolve the issue. Hiding or NOT installing Critical *Security* updates for .NET Frameworks is NOT recommended. It's only a matter of time until the cyberthugs start exploiting all of the unpatched, vulnerable Windows systems that are unable or unwilling to install Critical Security updates for .NET frameworks. Naturally, that time period depends upon the number of unpatched Java runtimes and Adobe products that they are still able to exploit so, time ain't runnin' out any time soon, but it will, eventually. You can escape from fewer messed up situations, with the way the Windows 7 one works. I did a repair reinstall once. There are instructions if you do a web search. Not as easy as XP by a long shot. KenW I tried one once but it didn't work. I forget what happened. I'm afraid I might screw up something. I have so much expensive SW installed and if I lose any I might be in trouble. SolidWorks for one had to be installed and setup by my IT guy so I had to bring the beast to work. Now he's so busy that might not happen for some time. I think I might clone the drive so if anything does go wrong I won't lose anything but time, which I have less of that disk space. |
