Scaremongering again?

Now *DON'T* cross the road (highway in yank talk) its too bloody dangerous
as you *MIGHT* get hit by a passing car (automobile) or even a lump of
dropping bird**** - put the problem into perspective FFS and carry in
surfing until a 'fix' is sorted.

Bloody hell, some yanks don't half panic over small problems!

Good day and enjoy your Christmas

I really don't care. I have used IE since the beginning and right now don't
plan on switching. I have never had a problem with any kind of virus,
spyware or Malware simply because I am not stupid when it comes to the
security of my system. If people were smart, and we all know that isn't the
case, there wouldn't be any problem to begin with. Systems would all have
antivirus protection, firewalls, and malware protection. That's where the
real problem lies.

I just got done working on a laptop that came to me infected with 389 pieces
if malware. I really wanted to just restore the computer and re-install
Windows, but the guy didn't want that. So, I spent the majority of the day
working to clean out the system. The funny thing is that the computer had 3
different antivirus programs and 2 firewalls installed. The guy was
wondering how all those malware programs got there. He had all of the
antivirus programs and the firewalls disabled. 2 of the antivirus programs,
Norton and Symantec, were out of date and had expired, so I uninstalled
them. I asked him about it when I gave the computer back to him. His
response? "They were slowing down my computer." Because of all of the
infections though, it took over 25 minutes to go through the boot process.
After cleaning the system and getting rid of the nasties, his computer
booted in just over 90 seconds. Then I enabled Avast Antivirus and Windows
firewall, and installed Antimalwarebytes, Antimalware and Spybot Search and
destroy, and left them all running in the background. Boot time had
increased by only 7 seconds. I told him all of this, and you know what
happened next? He had the balls to tell me to turn off the antivirus and
anti-spyware programs. What an idiot! But I guess that's why a lot of us
get paid. He just couldn't get it in hid head that he really needs to keep
his protection turned on and stop looking for free solutions to problems
that don't exist. He finally agreed to let me keep his protection enabled,
but how much do you want to bet that as soon as he got it home, he turned
them off any way? I will not work on this guy's computer again.

The point is that sometimes people are just plain stupid and/or are not
educated enough to know what they are doing when it comes to computers.
They just want to be able to turn it on and have it work. They don't think
about the ramifications of what they do with them.

And Alias please, don't go spouting the virtues of switching to Linux.
Linux is not nearly as simple to use and most people out there would get
lost. If they're clueless about Windows, and they are; they will be just
clueless about Linux. Maybe even more so.

Regards

+1, bettablue

I've been using Internet Explorer since version 4. I'm now happily using
IE9 beta. It is the fastest, safest, and most reliable version so far. I
use Microsoft Security essentials and do a Malwarebytes check about once a
week. Rarely find anything and never a virus. I'm using Windows 7 and keep
it updated. Can't understand why so many people complain about W7/IE.
Would be interesting to see statistics on how many MS users really are not
satisfied. I think it may be over reaction to the bleatings of the ABM
(anybody but Microsoft) crowd. The Silicon Valley royalty (Jobs, Ellison,
McNealy, Schmidt, etc.) have never gotten over the fact that Bill Gates
continues to eat their lunch.

In the beginning there was Netscape and Mosaic. IE wasn't born yet.

I have never had a problem with any kind of virus,
spyware or Malware simply because I am not stupid when it comes to the
security of my system.

Yet you stupidly use Window Live Mail for newsgroups.

If people were smart, and we all know that isn't the
case, there wouldn't be any problem to begin with. Systems would all have

The new IE exploit that you don't care about will NOT be stopped by any
anti virus or malware program. It won't be stopped by your firewall. All
you need to do is visit a compromised web site. Smart would be to ditch
IE and use a proper browser.

Even a clueless user like your friend could master Linux Mint. It's
easier to install and set up than Windows is, much easier and much
faster. And there isn't one single virus or malware in the wild for
Linux, unlike the 389 your friend found. I would venture to say that you
haven't tried the modern Linux distros and don't realize how user
friendly they are.

I'm curious. I suspect the number of Linux users, worldwide, is
quite large. Why is it then that none of the scum that infects windows
systems has not been developed for Linux as well? It seems to me that
virus authors just want to hurt people. Aren't Linux users people too? I
should think these virus ----ers would be salivating over the pool of
new victims.

Linux isn't easily exploited due to its architecture. The only known
exploits require physical access to the computer. Unlike MS, Linux
applications and kernels are inspected by thousands of people before
they're released. Fixes, updates and upgrades come much quicker due to this.

If you insist on using Windows Dead Mail, please remove signatures with
delimiters so that proper news readers won't nuke your post.

Remember, Linux, which just like the Mac, are considered immune to
viruses. Except, McAfee detected the Mac-based Trojan known as
"OSX/HellRTS". Malware has rarely been a problem for Mac users but now
it is.

Accessing a host of hard drives attached to networks is almost
effortless if you know what to do. Search YouTube for videos on how to
create “keyloggers” – the applications that will record every keystroke
you type without your knowledge – and you’ll find hundreds of “how-to”
guides.

But be assured, Linux is immune to all this. We have the halfwit's word
on this.

Minimal at best and needing user participation.

Do you think you're telling me something I don't already know? How many
key logger programs work in Linux? None? And how many require the user
to allow the program to install? If you can fool the user into
cooperating, well, puhlease, of course you can hack the machine. Just
ask the user for their passwords.

But be assured, Linux is immune to all this. We have the halfwit's word

No OS is immune. If I had your Linux machine in front of me, it would
take me less than three minutes to log in.
