ah yes- simple enough- now that you can get into your user interface for
printing...

to install a network printer whilst completely ignoring the windows xp
add new printer wizard:

1. open notepad (or something to print from)

2. file print find printer...

3. type the address \\computername\printername

4. finish up

-pretty intuitive at this point

oh well this is fun, maybe someone can explain it to me...

if you leave the printer control panel open whilst you attempt to print
something- a printer appears in the control panel! how exciting- if it
could only STAY there...

here's a great link to command line procedures to do basic printer tasks
(such as run the add printer wizard, etc):

http://www.robvanderwoude.com/2kprintcontrol.html

note:

Run printer properties:
RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /p /n\\machine\printer

Run add printer wizard localy:
RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /il

Run add printer wizard on \\machine:
RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /il /c\\machine

Run queue view:
RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /o /n\\machine\printer

and so on and so on

WOW- same exact problem here on a machine running XP Professional.

I ran sfc right away- it did replace some files, but did not fix the
problem.

There is a similar problem on 2000 machines that Microsoft posted a fix
for (article id: 271248) - I tried it, but it dod not help either.

I also expanded the main.cpl file from my xp disk and copied over the
existing. That did not help...

net start spooler just tells me the service is already running...

Unfortunately, I don't know when this started as I bought the pc from
my cousin and it came with the issue. It's clean as a whistle as far as
mal/spyware and virii, etc are concerned... it is completely updated.

I'm going to attempt an O/S repair from the disk (pray for me). I'll
KIT and let you know what I find out.
