Oh, ick. No wonder. That's why the steps to repro are so

important.
Next
time do your Norton Security last. It should never be running when
you're
installing updates and core software.
There's no telling what might have gone awry. I'll post the reg

patches
that
fixed this problem before SP1 was released so you can try them.

I'm
not
sure
you ever got a complete installation of SP1.

Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped out by

certain
update or repair operations in
XP. Try the following:

1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text between

dashed
lines
at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it).

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on RPCProt.reg - this

would
apply
the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the default

action).

3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or WordPad,

go
to
'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to 'File|Import' and
navigate
to the file.

4. Stop and then restart the fax service.

The contents of the attached file:
--------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientPr otocols]
"ncacn_np"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_ip_tcp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncadg_ip_udp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_http"="rpcrt4.dll"

What changed was I reformatted my HDD a couple of times

as
my children destroyed the other one the new disc was
purchased. it is effectively a new computer. the rest
of
the software I am using on my computer now compared to
then is all the same isn't any logical reason it isn't
working. with this install I have had problems with my
email clients as well it seemed about two weeks after I
reinstalled most registry keys for both outlook express
and incredimail vanished under the email heading this
has
since been fixed by reinstalling incredimail however
outlook still does not seem to have regained them since
removing and adding it via windows componants. it is
recognised as a newsreader but not as an email program.
(since I do not use outlook for email it isn't a great
concern and incredimail has been repaired) This is the
only anomaly to appear since the new installation.
However the Fax monitor has not been working at all
since
I did a clean install of XP.

List steps to reproduce......?

I don't have to DO anything to reproduce it is each
and
every time I send or receive a fax, notification
fails
to
happen the fax monitor fails to respond or
acknowledge
activity. the Fax monitor simply does not respond or
notify ANY activity in relation to sending or
receiving
fax. I have double checked settings everything is
set
to
notify however no notification is given either by
way
of
task bar or fax monitor when sending or receiving a
fax.
Modem responds, fax console receives the fax or
sends
the
fax and responds accordingly the problem is no
notification taking place. The fax monitor is also
set
to
open when sending or receiveing a fax yet fails to
do
so
the fax monitor will only open manually. and when it
does
so it does not display any current
activity.....simply
has the answer now button even if the modem is in
fact
sending or receiving a fax at that moment. Also when
receiving a fax the program does not disconnect once
the
transmittal has completed it simply continues
clocking
over the connection time with the modem active on
the
phone line. When a fax has completed sending it does
actually disengage the line once completed this
connection issue is only in regards to receiving.

The problem with the notification happens each and
every
time a fax is sent or received! it makes no
difference
which program I send a fax from it makes no
difference
who or which fax machine I receive a fax from.

Ok here is the problem I use my fax to both

for
the

six months. since I did a clean install a few
weeks
ago
however The Fax monitor shows absolutely
nothing
in
the
way of activity. it opens up it gives me the
options to
answer now or hide etc. but shows nothing if
you
extend
the display window. I have double checked all
of
my
settings I have it set to open automatically
when
sending
and receiving yet it does not open if a fax is
being
sent
or received. (this can be quite a hassle)it
will
only
open manually yet it answers a Fax whether it
has
been
opened or not (set to do so automatically
because
without
the monitor responding I have no way to
manually
receive
it conviently before my message bank kicks in)
There
is
the problem I have to disable it otherwise it
interupts
my phone calls. and if it does that i then
have
to
hang
up and call them back. If the fax monitor does
not
open
and does not respond to the activity I am
unable
to
disconnect it. nothing appears in the task bar
either
though it should.
The Fax itself works I can both send and
receive
successfully however when receiving it does
not
hang up
once the transmittal has completed it simply
continues
to
clock over the duration of the connection in
the
top
section and nothing at all appearing in the
lower
section. I only know what is going on by
checking
the
actual fax console.

I have removed then reconfigure the fax the
modem
the
lot....What more can I do I seriously need
this
thing
working?

you wouldn't have any idea how to get my outlook express working properly
would you? it kinda isn't recognised as an email client. one day I simply
found I couldn't make either incredimail or outlook express default clients
only outlook would pop up. reinstalling fixed incredimail but nothing has
fixed outlook think registry keys are missing.
wouldn't be so bad except for the fact I have absolutely no idea how to set
up a email account in outlook 97.(and isn't any instructions anywhere
either. (I like to at least have em working wether I use em or not)

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on RPCProt.reg -

this

outlook still does not seem to have regained them since
removing and adding it via windows componants. it is

I don't have to DO anything to reproduce it is each
and
every time I send or receive a fax, notification
fails
to
happen the fax monitor fails to respond or
acknowledge
activity. the Fax monitor simply does not respond or
notify ANY activity in relation to sending or
receiving
fax. I have double checked settings everything is
set
to
notify however no notification is given either by
way
of
task bar or fax monitor when sending or receiving a
fax.
Modem responds, fax console receives the fax or
sends
the
fax and responds accordingly the problem is no
notification taking place. The fax monitor is also
set
to
open when sending or receiveing a fax yet fails to
do
so
the fax monitor will only open manually. and when it
does
so it does not display any current
activity.....simply
has the answer now button even if the modem is in
fact
sending or receiving a fax at that moment. Also when
receiving a fax the program does not disconnect once
the
transmittal has completed it simply continues
clocking
over the connection time with the modem active on
the
phone line. When a fax has completed sending it does
actually disengage the line once completed this
connection issue is only in regards to receiving.

The problem with the notification happens each and
every
time a fax is sent or received! it makes no
difference
which program I send a fax from it makes no

who or which fax machine I receive a fax from.

activity. the Fax monitor simply does not respond

set
to
notify however no notification is given either by
way
of
task bar or fax monitor when sending or receiving

a

Modem responds, fax console receives the fax or
sends
the
fax and responds accordingly the problem is no
notification taking place. The fax monitor is also
set
to
open when sending or receiveing a fax yet fails to
do
so
the fax monitor will only open manually. and when

it
does
so it does not display any current
activity.....simply
has the answer now button even if the modem is in
fact
sending or receiving a fax at that moment. Also

when
receiving a fax the program does not disconnect

once
the
transmittal has completed it simply continues
clocking
over the connection time with the modem active on
the
phone line. When a fax has completed sending it

does
actually disengage the line once completed this
connection issue is only in regards to receiving.

the

I'm
not
sure
you ever got a complete installation of SP1.

Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped

out
by
certain
update or repair operations in
XP. Try the following:

1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text

between
dashed
lines
at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it).

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on

RPCProt.reg -
this
would
apply
the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the

default
action).

3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or
WordPad,
go
to
'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to

'File|Import'
and
navigate
to the file.

4. Stop and then restart the fax service.

The contents of the attached file:

fixed this problem before SP1 was released so you can

try
them.
I'm
not
sure
you ever got a complete installation of SP1.

Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped

out
by
certain
update or repair operations in
XP. Try the following:

1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text

between
dashed
lines
at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it).

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on

RPCProt.reg -
this
would
apply
the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the

default
action).

3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or
WordPad,
go
to
'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to

'File|Import'
and
navigate
to the file.

4. Stop and then restart the fax service.

The contents of the attached file:

when

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

Well first, I'd fix OE to get its mail transport registered. A reinstall or
repair operation should do it. You do want a fully functional installation
of it. You can find all the information you'd need on OE he
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlooke xpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlook express for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress for OE 6.x

A good website for information on OE is:
http://www.tomsterdam.com/

You're right. Outlook 97 is outdated and no longer supported. It was a very
cumbersome mail program at best, but I see no reason it would not work. Here
are the instructions for setting up e-mail in Outlook 97. Make sure you've
installed the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch first.
To Configure Outlook 97 for Internet Email:
* go to the Control Panel Mail applet
* make sure that the profile that's showing (which typically is the
contents of your default profile) has the following services in it:
- Personal Folders (this defines the location that mail/items can be stored
in)
- Outlook Address Book - this service one takes the
electronic addresses from Contacts and turns them into an address book)
- Internet Mail (a mail transport - this is the one that moves mail from
your ISPs POP3 server to your Personal folders and from your Personal
Folders to your ISPs SMTP server [the whole loop for Internet e=mail])

The only service that might have some confusing parameters to set in it
would be the Internet Mail service. Before setting it up make sure you've
got the following info handy (complete list - I'm sure you know some of
these but I'm gonna list them anyway)

(If you've got four tabs in the Internet E-mail service properties -
Internet Mail Enhancement Patch service):

[On General Tab]
- A 'friendly' name to distinguish this service from other Internet E-mail
services in the same profile
- Your name
- Your company (if applicable)
- Your E-mail address
- A reply address (if you want replies from mail sent from this service to
go to another address)

[On Servers tab]
- Your ISP's SMTP server name (Outgoing mail)
- Your ISP's POP3 server name (Incoming mail)
- Your POP3 account name & password (unless you've got an MSN or Compuserve
POP3 mailbox in which case you check the Logon using Secure Password
Authentication button)

[On Connection tab]
- How you want to connect to the servers
- Do you want to disconnect after sending & receiving mail from this service

[On Advanced tab]
I'd leave most of these alone with the possible exception of the "Leave Mail
on Server" option (if you want to leave mail in your POP3 mailbox for
collection from another computer). The rest of the options normally aren't
used unless your ISP has an odd setup or a slow server.

fax
for
the
last
six months. since I did a clean install

a
few
weeks
ago
however The Fax monitor shows absolutely
nothing
in
the
way of activity. it opens up it gives me

the
options to
answer now or hide etc. but shows

nothing
if
you
extend
the display window. I have double

checked
all
of
my
settings I have it set to open

automatically
when
sending
and receiving yet it does not open if a

fax
is
being
sent
or received. (this can be quite a

hassle)it
will
only
open manually yet it answers a Fax

whether
it
has
been
opened or not (set to do so

automatically
because
without
the monitor responding I have no way to
manually
receive
it conviently before my message bank

kicks
in)
There
is
the problem I have to disable it

otherwise
it
interupts
my phone calls. and if it does that i

then
have
to
hang
up and call them back. If the fax

monitor
does
not
open
and does not respond to the activity I

am
unable
to
disconnect it. nothing appears in the

task
bar
either
though it should.
The Fax itself works I can both send and
receive
successfully however when receiving it

does
not
hang up
once the transmittal has completed it

simply
continues
to
clock over the duration of the

connection
in
the
top
section and nothing at all appearing in

the
lower
section. I only know what is going on by
checking
the
actual fax console.

I have removed then reconfigure the fax

the
modem
the
lot....What more can I do I seriously

this
thing
working?

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

hmmmmmmm thanks for that Ill try to figure it out I usually get to setting
up profile and go HUH!

tried reinstalling outlook express and repair install nothing seems to work.
but I don't use it for email primarily I just like to have the options open
in case one stops working for whatever reason. (I do not like how it deals
with hotmail accounts) the problem is I cannot make it default I think the
registry keys are missing from the email section as a vague guess. if that
makes sense. the matter isn't urgent but I can't really leave it as is
likely to have it bite me on the bum eventually if I don't bother.

mmmmmmmmmmm got to go honey glazed lamb chops mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy.

Well first, I'd fix OE to get its mail transport registered. A reinstall

or
repair operation should do it. You do want a fully functional installation
of it. You can find all the information you'd need on OE he
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlooke xpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlook express for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress for OE 6.x

A good website for information on OE is:
http://www.tomsterdam.com/

You're right. Outlook 97 is outdated and no longer supported. It was a

very
cumbersome mail program at best, but I see no reason it would not work.

Here
are the instructions for setting up e-mail in Outlook 97. Make sure you've
installed the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch first.
To Configure Outlook 97 for Internet Email:
* go to the Control Panel Mail applet
* make sure that the profile that's showing (which typically is the
contents of your default profile) has the following services in it:
- Personal Folders (this defines the location that mail/items can be

stored
in)
- Outlook Address Book - this service one takes the
electronic addresses from Contacts and turns them into an address book)

- Your POP3 account name & password (unless you've got an MSN or

Compuserve
POP3 mailbox in which case you check the Logon using Secure Password
Authentication button)

[On Connection tab]
- How you want to connect to the servers
- Do you want to disconnect after sending & receiving mail from this

service

[On Advanced tab]
I'd leave most of these alone with the possible exception of the "Leave

Mail
on Server" option (if you want to leave mail in your POP3 mailbox for
collection from another computer). The rest of the options normally aren't
used unless your ISP has an odd setup or a slow server.

send
and
receive sucessfully I have been using

XP
fax
for
the
last
six months. since I did a clean

install
a
few
weeks
ago
however The Fax monitor shows

absolutely
nothing
in
the
way of activity. it opens up it gives

me
the
options to
answer now or hide etc. but shows

nothing
if
you
extend
the display window. I have double

checked
all
of
my
settings I have it set to open

automatically
when
sending
and receiving yet it does not open if

a
fax
is
being
sent
or received. (this can be quite a

hassle)it
will
only
open manually yet it answers a Fax

whether
it
has
been
opened or not (set to do so

automatically
because
without
the monitor responding I have no way

to
manually
receive
it conviently before my message bank

kicks
in)
There
is
the problem I have to disable it

otherwise
it
interupts
my phone calls. and if it does that i

then
have
to
hang
up and call them back. If the fax

monitor
does
not
open
and does not respond to the activity I

am
unable
to
disconnect it. nothing appears in the

task
bar
either
though it should.
The Fax itself works I can both send

and
receive
successfully however when receiving it

does
not
hang up
once the transmittal has completed it

simply
continues
to
clock over the duration of the

connection
in
the
top
section and nothing at all appearing

in
the
lower
section. I only know what is going on

by
checking
the
actual fax console.

I have removed then reconfigure the

fax
the
modem
the
lot....What more can I do I seriously

need
this
thing
working?

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

They prefer to discover and fix problems with fax after the software is
released rather than before

if it would cause problems like that why would they include it with the
disc. ...........?

I understand. The Custom install would not likely be the problem. The
application of SP1 before Fax was installed might be. That is the main
difference between your two installations.

the other disc did not have sp1 included. and yes it was a custom

install
I
prefer doing it that way I know whats being installed then. it wasn't

the
first time I had installed xp that's for sure.

But did your earlier disk also have SP1 preinstalled and did you

install
Fax
using a Custom install?
