No.

The option in Add/Remove/Windows Components is exactly what it says,
i.e. "Adds or removes access to Outlook Express from the Start menu
and Desktop". It does not remove OE.

I guess I've gotten two answers, which I appreciate, but am still left with
no answer to my question. Isn't there a way to uninstall OE?

You might find an answer in a OE ng. One suggestion, you can download
Mozilla Thunderbird and use it. Since it isn't tied so stringently to
the OS and your identity, there are less problems with repairing it; you
can remove it, then reinstall, if necessary.

Forgot to mention that you might wish to install Windows Live Mail
instead of the obsolete OE. If you like it do it first in order to
import your mails and accounts from OE into WLM. Then kill OE for good.

I don't know of a suitable way to uninstall/reinstall OE but try one
of the OE newsgroups.

[X-post to OE General]

No, you cannot uninstall OE, you can only remove access to it. Even if you
could, doing so wouldn't correct the problem.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

I think you are asking for trouble if you attempt to uninstall it.

Download WLM or Thunderbird and make the one you choose your default email
program.

That does nothing but remove the Shortcuts to OE, which cannot actually
be uninstalled.
