Why? Marriage is an artificial construction to begin with. In the
west it is a legally binding contract. One may have a committed
relationship without making it "official," just as one may enter into
a marriage purely for some other reason (immigration status, tax or
inheritance reasons, business reasons, legal loopholes like refusing
to testify against a spouse)

I would say the only reason to get married is for legal reasons, I
don't need a piece of paper to be honest with and committed to my
wife, we were devoted to each other for ~20 years before making it
matter of public record.
