Can anybody recommend one? I just don't want to end up with one
containing malware.

I've tried that and thought it worked OK, but with one
caveat: Be careful not to let it make decisions. I had
some duplicates that I assumed it would delete from data
drives and instead it deleted the copy on C drive.

There's a free version.

https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/dcdownloads.html

Download Pro v3.2.7
Download Pro v4.1.1

...

IMPORTANT!
If you are using Windows XP you will need to download Duplicate Cleaner Free 3.2.7.

Download Free v3.2.7
Download Free v4.1.0

The Free versions are near to the bottom of the page.

Expect a Free version to have fewer features
than the paid Pro version.

You'll only know how Free it is, when you test it.
Some free softwares I've downloaded here, were trial
versions and they would expire. And that means they're
not really Free. You will have to see whether this one
expires or not...

The free version is truly free. I've been using it for many years.

'CCleaner' (Free) has a 'Duplicate finder' (At'Tools' menu).

Have a lot of duplicate files do you? That's rather careless.

There's a free version, as others have said. The free version is missing
a few features, as others have said too. However, I'm using an older
free version 2.1.0, which was at that time, the only version so it is
not restricted in any way whatsoever. So I've set my version perpetually
to that version, and I don't let it upgrade. I don't see much
improvement in the newer versions, last I checked.

I might one day pay for one of the newer versions, but I don't really
use duplicate finders enough to justify it yet.

+1
I use the free version, and also Wise Duplicate Cleaner, which
has evolved a lot in the last 6 months or so. (bugs fixed).
Block with your firewall, they both phone home.

I seem to have the "pro" version. Must have been a giveaway, I
don't recall paying for it.
Maybe from here ?

I wondered about why he's so enthusiastic, too.
It was recommended here before. I tried it. It works
like a sledgehammer. Not to fault Duplicate Cleaner.
It did what it said it would. But after one use I
decided an automated program was not the best
way to organize and do housecleaning. Better to
spend a couple of hours once in awhile and do it
right.

Thanks for that pointer to WDF which I just tested, logging the following.

Version: Wise Duplicate Finder version 1.2.5.27 (copyright 2006 to 2016)
Webaddr: https://www.techno360.in/wise-duplic...-windows-free/
Exeaddr: http://downloads.wisecleaner.com/giv...regiveaway.exe
Archive: \\mynetwork\software\cleaner\wdf\
Default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Wise\Wise Duplicate Finder
Install: C:\app\cleaner\wdf
Symlink: C:\app\cleaner\wdf\WiseDuplicateFinder.exe
Depends: No software dependencies known
Warning: The first time it comes up it says "Your license key has expired"
But it still works if you "X" away that warning box
The warning only came up once but it may be time dependent
Setting: Turn off Check for Updates, Turn off Auto Backup,
Change default from "Match Name and Size (Fastest)" to "Exact match (Slow)"
Updates: Settings Check for Updates (set to) Never
Caveats: *You can't hit the "Keep One" button!* (this is a severe limitation)
After a search has found duplicates, you want to just "keep one".
It won't allow you to do that on the unlicensed version.
It also doesn't have any sub-selection (oldest, newest, etc.)
Manually check the boxes before pressing "Delete Selected"

After a couple of manufactured tests, I don't recommend the "free" version
simply because of two reasons:
1. You have to manually select the duplicates to delete, and,
2. Even with a paid license, it doesn't appear have multiple selection criteria
