Default Computer hangs when connecting to folders on w98 or wme machines

I have a small office network with a win 2000 domain and win me/win 98
clients. I recently added a new win xp client which suffers from hangs when
using shared files (MS Excel 2000) on win me or win 98 computers. After
startup everything seems to work fine, no error messages, fast access to all
shared resources. But after opening these files with Excel and leaving them
open for a while, trying to browse the lan or even trying to acces another
computer via shortcuts hangs the computer horribly.
This has not been confirmed, but the user says that she had two files (a and
b) open, t hen she saved them and the computer overwrote file a with file b
leaving the old version of b and the newer version of b in a's place.
I have tried everything, disabling the firewall (Symantec Client Firewall),
enabling WINS, shortcutting with ip adresses, etc
Please help me because i am planning to add new xp pro clients, and i need
to troubleshoot this issue ASAP.

Don't disable the firewall, uninstall it. Many firewalls say they are
disabled and are not.

I've spotted the problem

the xp pro machine's dns settings were pointing at the isp dns server
instead of my own dns server

thanks very much for the advice anyway
