Can't print from second computer. File sharing & internet OK
I have two computers and an ADSL modem linked via ethernet cables to a
switch. After turning off the firewall I discovered was preloaded onto my newly-purchased computer, I finally was able to file share. The internet worked on both from the start. Computer 1 runs on XP. Computer 2 runs on Windows98. Because of the older OS, I have not been able to do some of the tests previously suggested on this website which depend on everything running on XP. On Computer 1, the printer icon indicates that it is a shared printer (and print and file sharing is indeed checked). When I try to print from Computer 2, one of the options is the shared computer but when I try to print, I get the message "There was an error writing to [printer]." No problems printing from Computer 1 which is hardwired to the printer. A related issue is that I have mutiple printer icons showing when I click on each computer name under Network Neighborhood on Computer 2. This is because in my attempts to get the network working, I ran the Wizard several times with various options clicked. I was able to remove the extra computer icons from the XP computer by right-clicking and deleting but I can't figure out how to get rid of them on the W98 computer. Any ideas? I am not particularly computer-savy, though I can follow directions. So if you are able to advise me, please give me all the steps necessary to follow through (i.e. what sequence of steps to take and where to look). THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! |
