Well upgrading a clone on an expandable drive is the same idea,
right? And yes, I know lots of people have talk about VM here, but I
have stayed away since VM creates it own problems. Since I have
expandable machines, I like that idea better.

I have a whole basement full of extra machines but I can sit up here
where it's warm and clean and just fire up a virtual machine...it's
pretty easy.

Oh yes, my basement is cold too (normally like 55 degrees year around).
Luckily I have a huge house and laptops and tablets take up very little
room (and no computers in the basement), so I am ok.

or

Just plain clone my entire drive first

If that game you tried is freeware let me know what it is as I'd
like to see what's going on.

I never heard of any Electronic Arts (EA) game ever becoming free,
so I don't think so. Anyway my niece called me up a few years back
and asked what so and so error meant? She said it happens whenever
she runs Sims2. Heck I didn't have a clue and I didn't even know
what Sims2 was. I was going to the store anyway and I picked up a
copy. I ran it on one of my machines that was very close to hers.
And I discovered it was really picky about the Intel integrated
graphics driver that you were using. Any other version of the driver
except one, that error would popup.

snip

That's OK, I always have enough problems to deal with I really don't
need to start seeking them out

Yeah well at least this solution is now in the search engines. Although
the solution to upgrade Windows 7 with Sims2 to Windows 8 probably could
cause lots of problems itself. :-(

I do spend a lot of time in the basement during the summer...it's very
pleasant on a hot day.

Right now I'm taking a break from computer repair and have a few vacuum
tube radios on the bench.

Oh yes indeed, same here. Although most of my basement is the metal
shop, ping-pong table, and arcade machines (real things, coin operated).
Garage is a four car garage with a wall separating 2 1/2 car width with
a wall for the wood shop (has its own furnace). The other (1 1/2) is for
the car and my '95 Honda Shadow 1100cc (it's just a Harley wannabe).

I don't have a garage...If I did I'd probably have it full of everything
but cars.

I am making an honest effort of trying to clean excess junk from the
house and managed to give away some of my older computers on Craig's List.

Years ago I had a ping-pong table and was quite good at it.

Kept it right in the dining room and for Thanksgiving we were sure able
to fit a lot of guests around it for dinner!

(We took the net off and covered it with two table cloths)

Oh gosh, ain't that the truth. I added some shelves high up in the
garage to store stuff and that filled up quickly.

Well I am getting very close to this myself.

Years ago I had a ping-pong table and was quite good at it.

Just so-so here. Still fun though. :-)

Oh yes, good idea! :-)

If you've never installed an operating system before, once you've
brought an old machine back to life by installing Ubuntu or Mint all
by yourself, you may be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is, and if
it's really not for you, then you're no worse off than you were
before, and you've learnt something.

I have been doing fulltime freelance tech support for 13 years, so I'm no
newbie to this. I have successfully installed Ubuntu, Mint, and Easy Peasy
on computers. I like Linux, but it is NOT ready for prime time. I've had
driver issues, especially in regard to wi-fi. I've had video issues. And
then there is the end user. They're going to try to download games or
recipe databases or whatever and they're not going to work and then they're
going to blame me. No thanks. It's hard enough dealing with Apple users
who can't understand why QuickBooks is so lame on the Mac platform when
they've used it successfully on the PC platform.

None of what you're saying here contradicts what I'm saying, so I
guess we're both right.
