Anyone having a problem with Windows Live Mail?

This AM I tried to use my email - Gmail configured through Windows Live
Mail. I'm getting an AUTHENTICATION error. Haven't been able to use Live
Mail all day - very unusual.

I don't know but you can access gmail through your browser until you get
it sorted out.

You must have "less secure apps" set, right ?

Not all clients support the fancy authentication method,
and there's a setting to change it to work with legacy
programs. You do this on the web interface, then go
back to WLM and test.

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255

* Go to the "Less secure apps" section of my Account.
* Turn on Allow less secure apps.

If you've made recent changes to WLM, added a new account
of some sort, maybe you upset something else that gmail
relies on.

Is it likely that your settings in GMAIL has changed. Now it doesn't
allow pop3/IMAP access so you need to go to your GMAIL account and check
the settings if it is still SET to allow POP/IMAP access.

GMAIL, Yahoo and Outlook have become very strict these days and you need
to specifically change the settings if you want to access via eMail client.

I use Thunderbird and I don't have this problem you are describing.
However, the error you are getting indicates that your GMAIL account has
been reset to default and so access is denied via eMAIL clients.

Check out these settings in the Gmail web interface...

1. In Windows Live Mail, look at your account settings for Gmail
to see whether Windows Live Mail is using IMAP or POP to access
Gmail. You will need this information in step 4 below.

2. In your web browser, log into the Gmail web interface
and go to Gmail's Settings
3. Select the Gmail settings tab "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"
4(a) If Windows Live Mail is using IMAP to access Gmail,
make sure the Gmail settings say that IMAP is Enabled.
4(b) If Windows Live Mail is using IMAP to access Gmail,
make sure the Gmail settings say that IMAP is Enabled.
5. Now select the Gmail settings tab "Accounts and Import"
6. Click "Other Google Account settings"
7. Click "Apps with account access"
8. At the bottom right, make sure that "Allow less secure apps"
is turned on.

It's probably not what you wanted to hear - but why not take the best and
easiest way out. WLM is the worst email client ever produced by a country
mile - why not change to a new one that can handle the security settings.
Thunderbird (free) or emClient (free or pay with more than two email
addresses) work just fine.

Hi Ralph and Paul

There's no need to lower the Gmail security!

I agree that it's a poor choice, but I don't think it's the worst one.

I use Outlook.exe and generally like it. I've tried Thunderbird. I
didn't hate it, but I didn't like it as much as Outlook.

I've never heard of emClient, but I'll take a look at it later. Thanks
for mentioning it.

That did it. I don't know how/where/how this setting was changed and it
happened in the last two days. I feel like a jerk - if the shoe fits, wear
it!

FWIW I actually use Thunderbird with OAuth2 authentication - the answer
Bob Henson posted. Google Gmail rates OAuth2 authentication as fully
secure, and you do not need to lower the Gmail security for this.

For many people, App Passwords may be a good choice. But when I tried
it, the app password was actually less secure that my Gmail password.
* App Password: 16 hex digits (equivalent to 64 bits)
* My password 24 random characters (equivalent to 144 bits)

One more thing -- "2-factor authentication" must be turned on before
Google/Gmail will let you create an app password. You can turn it off
again, if you want, after creating the app password.

If, as is possible soon, Thunderbird is ruined by upcoming changes,
emClient is the one I would most likely switch to in preference to my old
version (2007) of Outlook. At the moment, its handling of PGP is limited
but if that can be fixed it tests out quite well. Following on from the
subject of the thread, it handles the newer requirements of Google and
similar automatically and much better than Outlook 2007.

The good thing was, it was easy to fix.

Who wants a problem that takes a year to figure out.
