I need help. My dell pentium 4 computer had windows XP
home edition and is running at 100% usage without any
known running components. What can i delete from the
processes that are running? (ie svchost.exe, it seems to
be taking up 50% of the components) Thanx for the help

The number of processes running is not the root cause of a sluggish
computer. Have you installed the latest drivers for your hardware?

1. Your computer may contain a virus.....

Perform a free virus scan: =

2. Your computer may contain some spyware.....

Download Ad-Aware and run it: =

3. Your system may have incorrect or unsigned drivers.....

Go to Start Run and type: SIGVERIF , and hit enter.

You may wish to perform a "tune-up" that may help:

1. Perform a DISK CLEANUP:
(Start Programs Accessories System Tools Disk Cleanup)

2. Go to Start Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the Command
Prompt window type: CHKDSK /F , and hit enter, answer "yes" and
reboot your computer.

3. Afterward, perform a DEFRAG of your hard drive.

I have the same problem and Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 317751 confirms this is a problem with XP. The
article also says there is an emergency download but the
links it gives on how to get the fix do not work.

In task manager click on applications ---what applications are running?
Right click on the application and select 'go to process' This will tell you
what process is associated with the application if one is running. You may
want to shut down virus programs and check the processes.

Your problem is not the same since his process is 'svchost.exe' and yours,
if Q317751 defines yours, is explorer.exe.
