Default "Type here to search" has stopped working

When I place the cursor in the "Type here to search" thing, a window
appear above it with some stuff about Cortana. But as soon as I type
the first letter of what I want to search for that window goes blank
except for a few icons on the lhs.

It's useless anyway and I use Search Everything for finding files on my
computer, but I'd still like to know why "Type here to search" has
stopped working.

And now it's working again. I had supposed computers to be
deterministic automata.

But their response is determined by a huge amount of state stored in the
registry, disk files, etc ...

How about user's level of intelligence? That should also be one of the
variables.

Did you restart the machine? Windows require restart after every
update. Just switching off and switching on does not solve the
problem(s). the machine has to be restarted. Now how this is done,
you'll need to ask a supplementary question and it will cost you £10.00.
