As far as I'm concerned, almost the only situation when a
laptop should be used instead of a desktop is when traveling,
because it's smaller and lighter, and therefore easier to
carry. In all other respects, a laptop is inferior to a
desktop:

Besides screen size... The fundamental difference is power. If
you're going to use a computer for portability, you don't have
the power of a desktop. When I consider games for my tablet,
that's comes to mind. Chess might be fun, but it's going to
suck the battery dry. I have a feeling that's why the maker of
X-Plane abandoned its attempt on the tablet, flight simulation
is power-hungry. That goes for lots of games. It's going to be
decades before battery technology is up to the task. But
tablets are a lot of fun anyway.

What do you mean by "power"? Computing power? If so that's not
true.

You should not have snipped so much of my post since you are
confused. I don't want to have to explain everything over and over
again.

You do know what "portability" means? It means you are running off
of battery power. Part of it depends on how much portability you
need and how many times you want to cycle the battery during a
day. You will notice that the most intense and enjoyable games are
not on tablets. I'm talking about mainstream games. Any gamer
knows what I'm talking about... Like $200+ video card gaming. Like
gaming systems that require 500+ W power supplies.

Tablets are cool but they can't do miracles. Like I said, it will
be decades before battery power will allow them to do the tricks
that a desktop personal computer can do.

I'm not confused. Your post wasn't clear The poster before you was
speaking about laptops and then you said, "Besides screen size... The

Portability

I never said a word about tablets. I'm talking about laptops which are
just as powerful as desktops. They are *portable*, and you can plug them
into an electrical outlet.

Here...I saved you the trouble.

I started this thread branch. I am talking about portable
(including ultraportable) personal computers. The more portable,
the less power. It's a fact of computing.

I haven't had my headers posted in a couple of days, so allow me to point
out that you made up a new definition for the word 'portable'. It doesn't
mean what you think it means. You've taken a very small aspect of
portability and you've brought it front and center, shoving everything else
that makes something portable to the side.

Hopefully, it makes sense that others are confused when you make up new
meanings for established words.

Permanently connected to a desktop is easy. Permanently connected to
laptop is much harder if you travel with it at all, or even if you
carry it to business meetings as Winston said.

I've seen quite a few of these in use with portable devices.
Western Digital 'My Passport Ultra'
- 1TB drive, usually more HD capacity than an internal portable drive is
about the size [l x w] of an index card and only 0.6" in height; the 500
GB model even smaller and less than 5 oz.

Wrong as usual. I have done exactly that. In fact, I defined
advertising's use of the word "save". The way you see it on
coupons, magazines, TV, storefronts, everywhere. Merriam-Webster
accepted at first. The rest have followed.

BY NOW AND SAVE!
SAVE $1!
SAVE ON SHOES!
SAVE 20%!

Those (and many more) are covered by my new definition of the
established word "save".

Sucks to be so wrong, doesn't it? But it is at every opportunity...

And, again... Anybody who knows anything about computers knows
that desktops are more powerful than laptops. And another
no-brainer is that laptops and smaller computers are meant to run
off of batteries. Being as someone who much prefers communicating
with intelligent people, I really hate having to state the obvious.

Idiot troll...

I suppose you'll redefine powerful now, just as you did with portable, but
for the standard definition of powerful your statement above is rubbish.
Some desktops are more powerful than some laptops. The reverse is also true.
I'm betting you knew that.

By "meant to", I assume you meant "capable of", not that I expect you to
know the difference.

You're really not very good with words.

A laptop will only make sense to you until you drop it, or spill

If you're going to plug a laptop into something at home, the most

regularly back up or synchronise your work.
