Install Classic Shell or Start8, they give you back the Win7 GUI
with all
the bells and whistles.

Oh yeah, I know about ClassicShell. I have it on my W7 at home and
was one
of the first things installed on W8, which went back to the store.
Those
tiles on W8 are the pits.

FWIW, I've used both, and bought the Start8+ModernMix bundle.
ModernMix
gives you the standard windows, resizable, movable, with title and
menu
bars, etc.

I assume you make your own PC or LT? When you buy a Dell or HP or
anything
off the shelf the OS is already installed so you get no choice.

You certainly *do* have a choice. The programs he's talking about
(ClassicShell, Start8, ModernMix) are all add-ons to Windows. They can
easily be added to off-the-shelf Dell or HP machines (or anything else
running a version of Windows they support).

I looked up "Start8+ModernMix bundle" but can't find any screen shots of
it. You mean it make 8.1 work like W7? I don't want something worse
than I have now. ClassicShell has not given me back what's lost from
W7.

Nothing restores Win8x to exactly what exists in Win7.

Behavioral adaptation is inevitable and necessary.

It's a bitch to pay $1,000 for a computer and have problems right out of
the box - not once but twice. The Dell with W8 lost the DVD drive and
had to be returned.

You paid $1000 for the computer...NOT the OS.

What problems are you having with the computer itself?

And what exactly did you pay $1000 for?

I bought this http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03602800 2 years ago
from Staples for $560 (with a rebate) and I haven't had any problems
with it.

If you have a problem with the computer ITSELF HP has a great customer
service dept.

Why in the world would someone want to replace the Windows 7 start
button with CS?

ISTM that your longer question was in a reply to my post and located
directly under my remark, as if you were asking *me*, not anyone else.

As for your "Huh?", it was

1. Before my post, and hence not possibly directed explicitly to my
remark.

2. And furthermore, it was completely ambiguous as to what you were
curious about.

You could, for example, have been unaware that Classic Shell has other
uses besides modifying the behavior of Windows 8.

And I was supposed to *know* that *you* don't use CS on Windows 7 since
you felt the need to reply with details from the website?

Huh?

By which I mean to ask you, Ron, what the relevance of that
statement/question is.

I replied with details from the website on the off-chance that you
wouldn't believe me, which in retrospect seems prudent.
