Windows Update problems - again!
Windows Miniupdate Tool shows a "Cumulative" security update of 04/10.
(182.76 gigabytes! Everything already on my drive totals 193 gb.) I have repeatedly tried to install this update, with no success. I have run the MS Update Troubleshooter several times. It always rebuilds the database, but I still can't install the update. Multiple error codes resulting from different attempts: 80070005 80240022 80070643 80240034 There must be some common thread with these, but danged if I can see it. Last time I tried using Update Tool to download the update rather than install it... Download reached 23.9 megabytes. Said complete. So I selected install... Said reboot required. I allowed it. Screen with message "working on updates." Got to 16% complete and rebooted. "Working on updates." "Couldn't complete..." rebooted. "undoing changes" Normal operation except many of my settings had been changed, and Comodo started as if it had never been run before, asking all the set-up questions. So much for "undoing changes." Other than the attempt to download first, this is what happens every time I try the install. So, restore backup made before trying to install Cumulative Security update 04/10. I've been going in circles with the above for two days. Any wisdom would really be appreciated. -dan z -- Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world. (Anonymous) |

Double-clicking the MSU will start installing it. Any tool worth its salt, will, upon the next reboot, re-calculate the updates, and then realize it's already installed. And consequently the one "jammed" in the pipe, will be canceled. An example of a Cumulative (one from April 10th), can be seen here. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...date-kb4093112 I see eight lines here, for example. http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....px?q=kb4093112 The one for my system would say it's 737.7MB and it's this one. "2018-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4093112)" The size of a download, could vary with language choice, and I don't really have any data on what to expect from that perspective. I also used a few supposed solutions from a variety of web sites to no avail. In the end, I was forced to restore the system, keeping my files (the built-in Windows method) and decided that I would no longer use any kind of registry cleaner which was, in my opinion, the source of the issue to begin with. It's actually quite amazing how well Windows works if you _don't_ clean the registry at all. |

That's if you do it from Windows. The script in this article, shows some of the techniques used. There are other tutorial articles similar to this, with three different scripts (slightly nuanced results). https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html The Windows Update Troubleshooter is supposed to do those very things. It's hard to say which came first. The script... or the Windows Update Troubleshooter. ******* If you download the update from catalog.update.microsoft.com , that can also have the desired effect of getting the update done. Even if the download file happens to be seven times larger. I do that sometimes when i get ****ed off seeing that stuff "loop". For example, today, if I know 16299.371 is the very latest update, I run "winver" and see I'm running 16299.334, then with a fair degree of confidence, I can hunt down the KB for it. Using the KB number, I can get the corresponding .msu from the catalog server. The nice thing about the catalog server updates, is they won't install if the update is already present. But they also won't install if the pre-requisites aren't met. By reading the KB article, I see i will be "shopping for two items". https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...date-kb4093112 "When installing both the servicing stack update (SSU) (KB4099989) and the latest cumulative update (LCU) from the Microsoft Update Catalog, install the SSU before installing the LCU [KB4093112]." https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4093112 2018-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4093112) 737.7 MB https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4099989 2018-04 Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4099989) 13.2MB Paul |

You need to stop the "Windows Update" Module before you can delete or rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. to stop the service you need to type: Services in the search box or Cortana and the Services.msc Desktop App will show up then click on it and look for something like in this pictu https://i.imgur.com/ehGBr3h.png https://i.imgur.com/ehGBr3h.png Great tip. That did allow deletion of all.
