I must have hit a sensitive nerve with the Vista pundits although
unintentional. Since reading some of the curt replies it now causes me to
wonder even more why XP represented over 40% of MS sales of OS software this
year. This is somewhat unprecedented I might add and is not a "flawed fact".

And now with MS issuing a SP3 it would appear to me that MS now recognizes
something that others do not.

Don't worry Tom.the two of them were trolls. Frank was not seemingly
wanting to explain why the tests were flawed. I doubt he access to any
real information.

It will be a bit of a problem for Microsoft if the reports are true.
What is a little strange is that SP3 is supposed to be a rollup of
updates since SP2. Real improvements was not supposed to be the name of
the game. Now Vista SP1 does need to incorporate improvements if
Microsoft want to see sales pick up.

That would infer that nearly 60% was Vista. So whats the big whoopie doo
about?

Bob

The interesting point is not what the percentages are but that there is
significant customer resistance to taking Vista on board. The operating
system has improvements in some areas but definitely takes steps
backwards in other areas. Microsoft seem to assume all customers are
dummies to be manipulated. I am not impressed with their pricing
strategy outside the US. As things stand I think Windows XP will remain
a better purchase option for many users for perhaps another 3 years.

However, one has to recognise that the latest gossip is about beta
products and could be totally misleading. Microsoft has, however,
miscalculated on the value of the changes in Vista, especially as
regards the commercial sector. Same point seems to apply regarding
Office 2007 although I am not conversant with the issues being still
reliant on Office 2000.

There's an old joke about human nature being based on studies done on mice
and college sophomores - neither of which are human.

For most commercial applications, speed is almost irrelevant. If, for
example, Microsoft Word were five times faster, the time to compose a letter
would drop by, um, 0.01%.

The folks who fixate on speed are open source developers and dedicated
gamers, neither of which ...

Cannot infer 60% was Vista. They sell huge quantities of Office products.

Forget it...that was posted days ago and the test used was severely
flawed.
Frank

Like SIX DAYS? That's OLD?
And would you like to explain to us less-knowledgeable people just WHY it's
flawed?
Just saying "it's flawed" could be you as a Vista apologist.....

Well, maybe you should read the damn article.

Using two different Office apps to do the test...2007 on one machine and
2003 on another completely negates any findings and totally makes for
"flawed" results.

Well maybe I did. They said that they "ALSO" tested Vista with Office 2007 -
ie AFTER the benchmark tests and AGAIN found that XP was faster then
Vista....maybe YOU should read the article as well.........

Even ms touts vista using the term "faster". So although ms might not be
fixated on speed, it certainly is touting "faster" as a major "plus"
aspect of the os, however irrelevant it might be in your view.

Actually the real interesting point is that it is very reminiscent of 5
years ago. 'nough said.

The search feature is definitely faster. Notice the word "find" is the
first word used after "faster and easier" in the ad.

Wasn't for me. It most likely depends on what you are searching for. The
Search function is a negative feature as far as I am concerned.
