Cannot install Brother HL1440 generic driver
I need some help for installing a driver for a Brother HL 1440 laser printer,
which connects with a USB plug. Brother instructions say to install the driver before the software (two separate tasks on the installation disk), and I cannot install the new, MS signed, downloaded driver. I am Administrator. I have plugged the printer into a direct home socket and disabled virus and firewall software when I downloaded and then tried to install the printer driver. There are no problems with the USB ports. Going into the Registry Editor, I find a file Brother under Software and it lists Name: ab (Default), Type: REG_SZ, Value: (Data not set) Details of Printer Driver Installation Problem: I initially went online to Brother Downloads and upgraded the printer driver with Brother-recommended BROHL144.PPD, which I had used to reinstall the printer on another computer after upgrading to XP. The wizard was not successful, but the Installation disk loaded the software program. However, it was simply not recognized anywhere except in Applications. I uninstalled it, and currently cannot find any remnants on the hard drive. I searched the XP newsgroups and found a few helpful letters, including references for a generic driver (BHPCL4.INF) and sites (including Brother) with specific instructions for installation. This driver is digitally signed to work with MS Word and is recommended for the Brothers HL1440. I downloaded this generic driver, which I have to install before I install the printer. I have followed every step to the letter, and get part-way through the final step (transferring data from the file to the computer/port) when it is interrupted with the message “Printer driver is not installed. Access is denied.” I have tried every port shown on the wizard, and not a single one worked. I have not been able to find any further help and hope somebody here can tell me what to try next. I would appreciate any direct help or other useful websites. -- E.J. Gibson Collins |

Thank you, but I have already tried these solutions
I am asked to find the BROHL.144.PPD driver, which does not insert/work (although this is the drive the original XP Home uses on my old computer). Another solution told me how to override this and go to the BHPCL4.INF driver (which is supposed to be better than the MS driver on the program), and even that does not work. I have tried using the "New Hardware Found" and "Add a Printer" wizards as well as the one on the Installation Disk, and I end up with Installation failed or Access Denied messages. I still need some advice, please! -- E.J. Gibson Collins "Rich Barry" wrote: Take a look here. Disconnect all USB Devices. Go to Device ManagerUSB Controllersrt
click on each one and choose Uninstall. Restart and let XP reinstall them. Look in Registry under Hkey_Local_Machine\Software and HKey_Current_User\Software. Delete all Brother folders. Uninstall any Brother Software and remove folder from Program Files. Then give it another try. "ejaygee" wrote in message ... Thank you again, but it didn't work!
I did everything that you suggested (even removing the Brother folder with a Brownie subfolder), except that I could not uninstall two remaining USB portals after I axed both my keyboard and mouse (both USB). I had to turn off the surge protector cable to get the computer to reboot and reload all the devices. Then I carefully plugged in the USB cable, turned on the printer, and watched to see that it was recognized as HL1440 (it was). On came the wizard and it started the same old loop, asking me to put in the CD to get the BROHL144.PPD driver (which is not on the disk, and which is not the current recommended driver)! This is the eternal loop that I have been struggling with for the past three days! Surely there must be some way around this. The printer is not that old, and it was not that cheap either! Thank you to anyone who can offer more help. EJ Gibson Collins -------------------------------- "Rich Barry" wrote: Disconnect all USB Devices. Thank you for your suggestion. No, I have not tried using an HP printer
driver. Would this be something I might find installed on the XP program, or something I would look for on the Internet? If the former, for what would I look and where? If the latter, for which type of HP driver would I search? Since I seem to be fouled by the wizard that detects New Hardware and then insists I insert the source for a certain driver (BROHL144) before I am allowed to proceed, the only way I can get around this and use a different driver is to "Add a Printer" from the Printers and Faxes window. Even this did not work with a driver that Brother says will work with XP. There must be something that will get around this! EJ Gibson Collins -- E.J. Gibson Collins "Michael W. Although I am not sure why an HP driver would work for a Brother printer, I
looked in a number of places on my computer and could not find anything that I could identify. The computer does not come with the XP CD, only the restore CD, and I could not identify anything on my other "upgrade" XP CD. When I went online, for some reason I was not able (repeatedly) to open the next page when I tried to download the HP LLaserJet 5Si driver! Having spent enough time on this, I guess I am still looking for another solution. Thank you for your suggestions so far. -- E.J. Gibson Collins "Michael W.
