System Restore does not work
using system restore maintenance using system restore to I have just found
that System Restore does not work - though it may not have worked for some time, it is not something I check. However, it was OK about 4 months ago when I installed a new hard drive. When I enter Help and Support undo changes .. with system restore or if I try performance and maintenance using system restore to undo changes, I get an error report with error signature "AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 ModName: srrstr.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00009826. I have tried to reinstall system restore using advice from this site but cannot find the file sr.inf. Also, in control panel sytem the system restore tab merges with the general tab and I get the error message "C:\Windows\system32\shell32,dll,Control_RunDl l C:\Windows\system32\sysdm.cpl",System" Other similar error messages appear with "4" replacing the last "System" depending what, in desperation, I am trying to do. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Ray |

System Restore does not work
Thanks Bert.
I followed the instructions (they were similar to ones I had found on the site before-but no success) but I received a message "file sr.sys on Windows XP Home Edition Service pack 2 cd is needed. Type path where file is located and press "OK"". By default I was offered c:\windows\inf\i386 but there was no response to this, when I entered OK. Then I searched on the Windows XP cd which came with the machine: found sr.sys but the system told me I had a more up-to-date version on my machine, so I declined. Then a series of other sr.*.* files were offered with the same out-of-date warning. I declined and am back to square 1! Thank you for the help you provided and the time you took to respond to my problem. I hope you might have time/expertise to offer more advice. Thanks again. System Restore does not work
Yogi,
Thanks for this. I had never heard of sfc /scannow but found it, tried it and repeatedly got stuck on "Files that are required for Windows to run properly .... DLL cache." The instructions which accompanied sfc /scannow were a little beyond me!!! So, it's back to square 1. Thanks for your help and the time you took to respond to my problem. System Restore does not work
Bert,
My apologies. I had followed the instructions but had forgotten the last two lines on the site to which you directed me - they tell me what to do if I'm using ServicePack 2 Cd or Download from Windows. That does apply to me, I've followed the instructions, it has reinstalled my System Restore facility and you are a star! Thanks. Ray "Ray" wrote: Thanks Bert. If so do a search for SR.* by going to Go to Start - Search - All files and folder - All or part of the file name, and expand More advanced options and check next to: Search system folders Search hidden files folders Search subfolders If this the SP2 CD released separately from Windows, this will not work because the files are located in an executable file and can not be accessed.
