Default XP Network Trouble

Hi,

I am having trouble with my laptop with my connection.
First things first:

I am regularly using the laptop at 2-3 different internet connections,
all are cable-based systems which are online 24/7, so no login/dialup etc
required. Secondly I can assume that all systems work properly and that
the error must be on my side.

The problem is as follows:

2 out of the three internet connections work fine. Only one gives me
trouble:
Normal webbrowsing works 90% fine. However, FTP, IRC and SSH & messenger
connections run into trouble again and again. I am getting disonnected
from IRC & SSH, and FTP just dies and I have to reset the connection
status and login again. Messengers (AIM, MSN, Yahoo) seem to disconnect
regularly. I can reconnect without trouble, but I get kicked out every 5
minutes.

I am running Windows XP SP2 without firewall.
The connection where I have trouble is a fixed IP NAT.
This is the ipconfig:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network
Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-08-0D-B4-6D-F2
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 195.96.0.4
195.70.224.45

Where can I start searching for the problem? What tools are there to test
the point at which the connection is interrupted? Any prior cases to
compare? I am guessing that if I re-install the whole OS it might work,
but it would be quite some effort...

thanks

Oliver

It would be more helpful to have your hardware setup (i.e. router config,
other pc ip's, type of network, etc). I would suggest if dhcp is present
anywhere in the network it's giving the 1.3 ip to another pc and you're
getting booted off that way.

Certainly you don't want to reinstall Windows for this error. I would
rather ask myself what is different at the location where you have the
trouble. Are these corporate locations? That's what it sounds like. If
so, contact the IT Dept. there because the services with which you are
having trouble are often disabled by systems administrators in a
corporate network.

There are not corporate. The ones that work are systems with DHCP. The one
that does not work needs a fixed IP. Its a Cable-Modem with a router that I
cannot look into since the provider locks it. There is no blocked service.
I can FTP and Chat and SSH, but it simply breaks down after some time.

For example FTP: I can upload and download data with various programs, but
after the first download was completed, and I try to change to a different
directory, I have to re-login

IRC: I cna login to the network, the channel and write 2-3 lines, and then
I am beeing kicked out again.

Similar with SSH.

Then I'm sorry, I have no idea. Maybe you can create a different
hardware profile for the laptop for the third location? Otherwise, try
posting in one of the networking groups where you might find more
specific expert advice. Here's a link to a list of all the MS
newsgroups:

http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

Good luck, and I'm sorry I didn't have an answer for you.

thanks a lot anyhow. I have dug into the issue a bit more. It turned out
that the otherr computer had the same issue in the end. so it seems to be a
provider problem that I can escalate to them.
The other computer just did not turn out to have problems because all they
did was HTTP downloads and none of the stuff that I had trouble with.

thanks for your support!!

I didn't really do much to help you, but I'm glad you are getting it
sorted with your provider. Thanks for letting me know and good luck.
