Default "New and Improved" - ain't

Arrgh

After many years, I have gotten the taskbar to be the way I not
only like, but expect: two columns of icons on the left side of the
screen, the more "popular" ones in the right column, compatible one
the left. E.G., Top left column is Mailwasher, top right is the mail
program. Left column Word processor, right column Wordpad,

So this morning - nothing. All blank, nothing there. "Fortunately,
I keep them numbered for just such an eventuality." Or in this case,
a screen capture of the proper layout. Only - no can do the two
columns.

My question is: any guesses as to what got "fixed", "improved" or
enhanced, and how do I "unfix" it?

Windows 7 Pro is the software, if that's any help.

The question was asked: "Is Hindsight overrated?"
In retrospect, it appears to be.

Found out the problem - Microsoft in its insanity feels that I've
no need for Quicklaunch anymore.

They should have interior decorators come in weekly and redecorate
their offices. Open the curtains, change the curtains, replace the
lighting with disco-strobes (and hide the off switch). Change the
default font to 24 Bodoni Ultra and the color to light grey. Then
change all the paper to florescent pink, green or purple.

QuickLaunch still functioning here, intact on a fully updated W7 Sp1 x64
Pro device with all updates installed.

Have any theories on what you or think MSFT changed ?

Fyi...Quick Launch is a tool bar that resides on the Task Bar(i.e. QL is
not the Task Bar).

I had it "yesterday", so I was quite surprised when it wasn't
there in the morning.

the taskbar. However, you can follow the steps in this article to
restore the Quick Launch bar and the Show Desktop button as it was in

I can drag the icons to the taskbar, but it gets really crowded
when you have more than three.

I knew that, but had forgotten. Sigh, it is like getting
directions in a small town "You go out on the old highway, turn left
where the school burned down, at the second right go straight, just
past the Macgruders." No street names, everybody just knows what it
is.

Fyi...if you were using one or the other TaskBar or Quick Launch

Both store the shortcuts in your AppData\Roaming\... folder

C:\Users\,your windows logon name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

C:\Users\,your windows logon name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet

Thanks. I found that, eventually, at
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/add-the-quick-launch-bar-to-the-taskbar-in-windows-7/

and they wrote go to:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

...and 'take it from there'. I wound up renaming all the shortcuts,
prepending numbers to they would be sorted in the "correct" order
