ME to XP modem troubles
I just upgraded from ME to XP on my Dell Inspiron 4000 (128mbram, 700mhz).
When I create a new DUN connection it automatically shows the connection using "Unavailable device COM1". So, since I have a winmodem I went and got a xp compatible driver and updated it. Nothing. COM 1 unavailable - device missing (the connectoid says device missing, while the properties say unavailable device) Then I read some posts that said make sure the modem is on COM 3. It is. The next post said to check the COM port in device manager. IT is the only one listed, and is on COM 1. I changed it to COM 3. Nothing. Still missing. I changed them BOTH to COM 1. Still missing. I switched and changed COM port to 3 and the modem to 1. Nothing. device missing. I queried the modem and got a 'success' message. I checked the modem in device manager and it is enabled, no conflicts and is working properly. However, it is not. Since the upgrade I don't even have a Dial up Networking folder (is this usual?) nor can I select the COM port I want on the connectoid. How do I get the modem to work? TIA, Teri |

ME to XP modem troubles
Go to the device manger and delete the com port and the modem and anything
related to the modem. Reboot. The com port should go back to where it's supposed to be, then the computer should detect the modem, and hopefully ask you to install drivers. If that doesn't work, modems are cheap and new ones are sometimes easier that pulling hair out over an older one that's misbehaving. "Teri" wrote in message ... TIA, Teri You can query the modem and it is successful. Device Manager shows it is set up and working. What happens if you create a new connection for the modem (old connectoid could be corrupt)? Does it fail to work too? DialUp Networking is now called Network Connections. You should see it listed as such if using classic view in Control Panel. With category view, it's called "Network and Internet Connections." You can add Network Connections to the start menu by using Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. -- Sharon F Microsoft MVP, Windows - Shell/User |

ME to XP modem troubles
"Sharon F" wrote in message What happens if you create a new connection for the modem (old connectoid could be corrupt)? Does it fail to work too? Yes. I have tried it several times and it always responds 'device missing'. I would love to go buy a new modem but now I am out $100 for XP. I will re-install Win ME. Never had a problem with it....yet. ;-) Thanks for your help. Teri |
