Default .NET Framework

Hi,

I am trying to free up disk space and see in Add/Remove Programs that I have
all of the below .NET Framework versions installed. I am wondering if I need
all of them, or has 3.5 SP1 replaced all the others and I can remove them? I
am running Win XP SP3.

1.1
2.0 SP2
3.0 SP2
3.5 SP1

Many thanks,
Adam

They are all independent of each other.
I just keep them all since I have space, but I've seen others comment
that they have none and have seen no ill effects.

Better in the short run to free up disk space by buying a larger hard drive.
The small amount of space freed by getting rid of .net framework will buy you
a few weeks, then you'll be back in the same boat. Hard drives are getting
pretty cheap; saw a 1.5 TB drive at Fry's last week for $99 320 GB for $39.99

Sorry, that's not correct. Version 3.5 includes 2.0 and 3.0. So he
should keep 1.1 and 3.5, but 2.0 and 3.0 can be uninstalled.

The .net frameworks are run time files for programs written with .net.
If you delete them, you will see no ill effects unless you try to run
such a program. If you try to run such a program and don't have the
appropriate .net framework file installed, the program won't run until
you install it.

So I recommend that you keep the 1.1 and 3.5 files installed. They
don't take up much room and will be there if and when you need them.

See the reply in this thread I just sent to big Al. Let me add another
point for you: the amount of disk space these use is small. If that
amount is significant to you, anything you save by deleting such files
will be nothing but a stopgap measure. The *real* solution to your
problem is to buy and install a larger hard drive. Fortunately they
are very inexpensive right now.

Doesn't that make them "independent"? The install of 3.5 includes 2 &
3, but that doesn't make them dependent on each other, since you even
state 2 & 3 can be uninstalled.

You'd gain more space by turning off System Restore and having good and
frequent external backups.

Version 3.5 includes 2.0 and 3.0.
So he should keep 1.1 and 3.5, but 2.0 and 3.0 can be uninstalled

When I look in Add/Remove Programs I see:

Microsoft .net framework 2.0 SP2 184 MB
Microsoft .net framework 3.0 SP2 178 MB
Microsoft .net framework 3.5 SP1 28 MB

It's difficult to understand how 3.5 could "include 2.0 and 3.0"
and be such a small fraction of their size.

The "install" of 3.5 includes 2, 3, 3.5. They are all separate packages.
