Default Exchanging hard drive

I have a 10g hard drive that is old and running out of
room anyway. I have a new 40g hard drive that I am going
to replace it with. What program could I use(price
doesn't matter), to image the entire disk and place it on
the new disk? Will this work(boot) since it is a
different drive? If all else fails I will just do a clean
install. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge.

Symantec Ghost. http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/
If the new drive has a utility cd, like Maxtor or WD, then it may have a
function for cloning the old drive to the new one. There are other
strategies, such as a backup and restore, depending on what backup program
you have. What version of XP are you using?

XP Pro. To use Ghost would I have to connect the new HDD
while the old one is still connected? I have Systemworks
2004 Pro, which also includes Ghost(I think). Will the XP
Backup be enough to do what I need or, since I have it,
should I use Norton Ghost?

Yes, they both have to be connected at same time to clone one to the other
(unless external disk is used).
I haven't done it with Ghost, but the HD manufacturers usually have a
program to do that.
It usually involves jumpering new (bigger) disk as slave, connecting it to
computer, booting (from HD mfg's floppy), cloning (old-new), shutting down,
disconnecting BOTH disks, jumpering new as master (on primary IDE),
connecting it. Now booting from the new one, _should_ be OK. Do it a few
times and check that the system (h/w and OS) is running OK, then you cxan
connect the old disk (jumpered as slave on primary IDE) and format it.

XP Backup will not come close to doing what you want, you will need a
product like Ghost.

Yes, of course--whether you use Ghost or any other program.. You can't read
from the old drive unless it's connected, and you can't write to the new one
unless it's connected.

Yes.

No.

or, since I have it,
should I use Norton Ghost?

Although Ghost is one choice of programs which will do it, there are others.
But as you say, since you already have a copy, you might as well use Ghost.
