Default won't run .exe programs

I have up-to-date Panda virus software on my computer. After the last Windows updates download, the XP virus scanner windows kept coming up saying I had numerour infections and I couldn't get the windows to go away. I ran a full scan with my Panda which called for a reboot afterwards. The XP virus scanner windows didn't come back but now my desktop icons come up as "application not found" when clicked on. Using the start menu pop-up results in the same thing. Even spoke to Windows support online and downloaded their remote support files but they won't run, only a screen asking what application do I want to use to run these files. I got a "that's weird" comment from the online person (so encouraging, lol). A friend gave me a registry mechanic program on a USB plug-in stick but all that happens when I try to run it is the same window as before asking what application I want to use to run it. Dead end. Any help out there?

First, find an exe file...any exe file, not a shortcut to it. Will it run?
If not, GOTO 6b below.

1. Right click a desktop icon

2. Left click "Properties" on the menu that popped up

3. Look at what's in the "Target" window

4. Using Windows Explorer (Win key + E), go to the target folder
- OR -
Left click the button near the bottom that says "Find Target". If
Windows complains that it can't find the target or that something is
invalid, the path in the target line is incorrect, GOTO #6a

5. Is the exe to which the desktop icon points in the folder? (The icon is
a shortcut *to* the program)

6a. If no, use Windows Search to find the exe, make a new shortcut to it and
put it where you will
6b. If the exe no longer exists, you will have to reinstall it or restore an
image or - maybe - use System Restore. Might even have to reinstall
Windows.

Thanks dadiOH, I tried the middle url and it SEEMS to have worked. I haven't tried too many icons yet, but the first one I did try has worked. I hope this will solve my issues.
