Default WindowsXP GUI

Is there a way to start WindowsXP so that the GUI does not
load but a command line application can still be run?

You mean 'boot to DOS'? Nope. You could use a boot disk but bear in mind
that, if any of your hard drives are NTFS formatted then you will not be
able to execute any commands nor read the contents as DOS doesn't recognise
NTFS.

Hey Steve
You could try changing the shell string in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
from explorer.exe to your programs path and executable.

As Mark suggested, change the Shell value to CMD.EXE That will open a
command prompt window on the logon screen, with a blank desktop, no start
menu and no taskbar.
