Default Win XP2 SP2 uninstalled still having problems

Unfortunately, I installed SP2 before reading the caveats...After huge
problems, I immediately uninstalled using install/uninstall programs and my
computer ran better. I'm still having problems with my computer and just
recently realized they go back to my install of SP2. I read where one user
was directed to use system restore to go back to before the installation.
How is this accomplished and what files, mail, etc. will it eliminate with
it? Also, I don't remember the date of my install, so was the SP2 auto
update sent out to every user at the same date, and what was that date? If
not how can I find the date to go back?

Default Win XP2 SP2 uninstalled still having problems

It's badwrc again. I found system restore and can't go back as far as my
initial install. My computer runs slow and starting up, the computer finds
'serious errors' that are from different device drivers, it crashes almost
daily, etc. Is my system repairable or do I need to 'wipe the slate clean' (
reformat) and re-install all of my programs and files?

there is a way of uninstalling sp2 via the recovery console when you boot up
xp, you need to find an article on microsoft knowledge base about asr
(automated system recovery) and that tells you what to type at the command
prompt.

this will restore the system to its state pre sp2, but keep all your new
files.

hope this helps, i'll have a look at work tomorrow for the files, as i have
just had to do this on a customers machine, and all is running fine now, and
we have not lost any files of emails created since SP2 was installed.

this is all ok as long as you have not removed any %ntservicepackuninstall$
files from the windows folder (these are shown in blue writing and the folder
picture is faded!).

If you installed SP-2 and it since reinstalled, it is because you have
Automatic Update enabled and also accepted the EULA:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab
Make selections as desired

Also see this link if you want to leave Automatic Update enabled and
not get SP-2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2aumng.mspx

See the Service Pack Installation Checklist before installing SP-2:

Thanks Jupiter, but sp-2 hasn't been re-installed. It still indicates sp1 as
my most recent upgrade and I still get popups from my systray to upgrade to
sp2. I've now used system restore to go back as far as it will go and see
what happens. So far it seems pretty good. Booting up gave me no dire
messages (though I didn't get them every time) and it is much faster. Beyond
that, I'll use the recovery console(after backing up my register). After
that, I may have to reformat my hard drive, give the computer to my son and
buy a mac.

Unfortunately those files are gone apparently with my uninstall.

I may be missing something.
Are you still having a problem?
It all sounds OK, but you are mentioning reformat.

No, I'm not having a problem-yet. I've been through this before and the
computer will still have problems. I just said that I had a couple of
options if this present fix doesn't hold. Right now it's working fine and if
it continues to be ok, I'll go through MS recommended install of SP2. Thank
you for your assistance.

As I said, there may be problems and this morning I'm having problems.
Programs either ran slow or didn't load and I had to cold reboot. On to the
next step....

i would always doubt if you will be able to successfully de-grade your
system from service pack 2 to service pack 1 once again.

i would recommend a simple solution.
1. clear all your temporary downloaded files manually first
2. go for an windows xp sp2 update once again.
3. let it finish properly
4. reboot your system

post your reply here once again.

I do not think, if you can successfully migrate to sp1 again after
installing sp2

Windows update keeps history of everything you download. Also when you go to
system restore a calendar will come up the darker numbers are restore points.
On the side of the calendar is the list of what you have added or deleted
whenyou get to sp2 click on the one that says the day you added sp2. It
should say something like restore to date before adding sp2. You shouldn't
lose anything else. yYou should keep a back-up of anything you don't want to
lose anyway. I had to do a complete restore on my pc after I deleted sp2 and
then you lose everything unless you back it up.I think sp2 is too big & uses
too much memory, but not really sure I just know it messed up my pc too. I
hope this helps. Sandy
