ICS & XP2
HI! I'm new to this forum, and first of all let me say hello to everyone.
I've got a problem with SP2. I use a Lan at home, without hub ( I just connect 2 pc with a lan cable). Before installing SP2 I could share files between 2 pc and I could share my intenet connction without problems (I used to download files, use program sharing, outlook express etc etc etc all behind the lan without any problems). Now the "gateway", which is really a normal pc which connects directly to the net, has SP2, and I can't share my intenet connections anymore. The other PC still has SP1. I read on many forums, as well as on microsoft site, that users have had problems with windows firewall, but none of the proprosed solutions seems to apply to my problem, mabye because they're about problems with programs and not with sharing internet connections. I used the automatic XP lan setting, but this doesn't help either. can you help me? thanx, andrea (italy) |

Use the Network Setup Wizard to make the settings, since it knows exactly how to configure the Windows Firewall. Then, check these settings on both computers: 1. On the gateway, right click the local area network connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show: IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: none DNS Server = none 2. On the other computer, right click the local area network connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show: IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1x255) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the other computer and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies: ping 192.168.0.1 ping 216.239.39.99 ping google.com 4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer. They should both take you to the Google web page: http://216.239.39.99 http://google.com -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I just run the test you suggested.
I recieve four reply from the addresses you gave me, and as a mastter of fact google.com is one of the web pages I can see with IE. I tried "ping microsoft.com" (which is one of the wb pages I CAN'T see), then "ping virgilio.it" (same as microsoft). It turns out that all of the pages I can see pass the test, while the others fail it (obviously). I still can't solve my problem.....I can recieve mail (at a very Low speed) but can't send it.....oddly, winmx is working fine, while messenger is not. no need to say that from the host computer all of the web pages work right and I can sand and recieve mail. Any hint at what my problem could be? How does the ICMP protocol relates to all this? should I authorize it on the lan card? n.b. right now I've disabled windows firewall. I know this can create "holes" i my security(windows keeps reminding me), but if I want to solve this problem I have to proceed one step at a time. p.s I still can't understand why the automated network settings isn't working properly with SP2. It worked fine with SP1. By the way, i've got SP1 on the client, but I can't belive this is the problem: SP1 and SP2 were both relased by microsoft.......and they relates to the same OS...... thanx a lot andrea Quote:
