XP Pro simple file sharing vs. standard
I have a simple peer to peer network. One XP pro machine and one XP home
machine. With simple file sharing turned on the pro machine, the home machine can access shares with out entering any credentials---just how I want it. When I turn simple file sharing off on the pro machine the home machine needs to enter credentials regardless of the permissions set on the pro machine. It does work but I have to enter info after every login. The guest account is enabled in both instances. What changes when simple file sharing is enabled and how can I do it manually? Another odd thing is when I have identical users set up on both machines including passwords I have to re-enter info when accessing a share on the pro machine(when simple sharing is off). I have done this on other networks as long as I am logged in as a common user I can browse without entering anything. I am not really in a bind but I would like to understand how this works. Thanks in advance for any help. Jarrett |

Thanks in advance for any help. Jarrett That's just the way it is. The problem is that XP Home does not cache credentials for LAN connections. When using Simple File Sharing on the Pro box, this does not matter. All connections are treated as Guest anyway. But when you disable SFS, you need to supply credentials. If you set up XP Home with a username and password that matches a user account on the Pro machine, you will get straight in. Otherwise, you will need to supply the credentials each time. -- Best Regards, Ron Lowe MS-MVP Windows Networking |
