Default hardware detection/software problems after autoinstalling Windows' XP SP2

I can't read a drive letter for my parallel port zip 100
disk drive. I am having a hard time backing up files ect.
since service pack 2 installation on windows XP home
edition. I haven't even tried to install the zip drive on
the HP laptop. I have a jump drive and would like to know
how to use this way to back up files. I can easily copy
files to the jump drive, but the how about burning cds for
back up. The utility that is included in XP doesn't seem
to allow me to gather all files for back up and I have to
do the math to figure whether or not a certain set of
files, folders will fit.
I thought if I used my zip drive to just copy files and
folders over to there, that would be simple, but computer
doesn't recognize it as hooked up.
I had quite a bit of probems with the SP2 autoinstall
because it says to go out to the (compacq/hp in my case)
to upgrade iomega and others. Also having problems running
other programs that were fine with SP1.

Kathie,

You are not the only one to have problems with Service Pack 2. I would
uninstall it and that should clear up your problems. But, no guarantees.
There are specific steps that you need to take to install SP2. These are
outlined on the Windows Update website. SP 2 is a major update to the XP
operating system, and it makes wholesale changes to thousands of lines of
code.

Personally, I will not install it. At some point in the future, Microsoft
is going to make it mandatory to install Service Pack 2 in order to keep
receiving critical updates and patches. Until that time, I refuse to
install it.

I use my CD-RW drive to burn back ups of my data and files and it works just
fine. I use Nero to burn the CD's, but the burning software included in XP
should be able to burn data disks for you. I have never used it as I prefer
Nero. Your jump drive is also capable of storing your backup files and
data. You should be able to use Windows Explorer to drag and drop files and
folders to it as if it were another drive in your system.

Of course, all this is probably not working properly because of a bad
installation of Service Pack 2. Consider uninstalling it and see if this
helps. Post back with your progress, or lack thereof, and we'll see if we
can be of further assistance.
