Default Switching Users Locks Everybody Out

Often, when I switch back to the main login screen so family members can
access their accounts, passwords suddenly stop working for any account. Even
one limited account that has no password begins prompting for one. The only
thing we can do is reboot the machine because we are all locked out. This is
extremely annoying and I've lost reams of work because of it. Ideas anyone?
Similar behavior?
