Default computer starts up on its own

I recently re-installed XP pro on my pc, with all the updates and SP3.
When I shut it down at the end of the day it regularly immediately
goes to start up again and I have to hold in the reset button to shut
it down. Last night I shut it down normally (at the second attempt).
All the pc's lights went out, the drives stopped, the fans stopped and
the speakers did the little 'pop' that they normally do.
A good half hour later I heard the pc whirr into life, the internal
speaker beeped, the main speakers 'popped', the fans started up and
windows reopened - all by itself!
Any ideas please?

Look in the BIOS for "Wake on LAN" or similar options and turn them off.
