CHKDSK won't complete Stage 2 on any boot drive, even after recove
I'm writing this for XP, but it's the same problem with Vista on my dual-boot
PC... I recently encountered a power surge, which caused my PC to shutdown. I was running in XP at the time. I powered back up, and everything seemed fine, so I proceeded to do a CHKDSK on all my drives. My two backup drives checked out OK, but both my XP & Vista boot drives get stuck when it comes to verifying the indexes. (Stage 2 sticks on 0%) I intially restored a backup image of my XP drive, but this had no effect. I then booted up the Recovery Console on my XP installation CD, and then ran the CHKDSK /R command. This initially appeared to do the trick, and was able to complete a Stage 2 check using XP (although it stopped @ Stage 3). However, I'm back to where I cannot even start a Stage 2 check using CHKDSK on either boot drive. Am I resigned to reformatting & reinstalling, or is there something else I can try? I don't appear to have any problems running either OS, but in both cases, I cannot perform a basic CHKDSK on a boot drive. |

With other hds or partitions running at same time on pc,CHKDSK /R is an
improper cmd.Try in recovery:CHKDSK C: /p If it runs all the way,run again, then run:CHKDSK C: /R "TJ" wrote: I'm writing this for XP, but it's the same problem with Vista on my dual-boot PC... Did a safe boot immediately afterwards, proceeding to do a standard disk check. As before, it got stuck when it came to Stage 2. I've yet to perform a CHKDSK with the /P parameter. Will the details this provides, help in any way? |
