Er.. did you 'check for updates' after you unchecked the unwanted
updates? (I am guessing the shield will have gone away by the time you
next boot-up. You will instead have a warning that you have hidden
(suppressed) updates.)

Thanks for your help. I used the custom button and took the checkmark
out
of the box and the yellow shield is still in the lower right hand corner
of
my monitor telling me I have updates to install. I installed other
updates but this particular one will not install on my computer but I
can't
get rid of the yellow shield telling me I have updates to install.
That is
the only one I have and it just won't go away.

Default Windows Update

Go back and follow Malke's advice. The notification will go away.

I have a windows update to be installed and my computer will not
allow it.
It fails everytime. The little yellow shield stays at the bottom
right of
my screen telling me to install it. I would rather not at this
point.
How can I get rid of that shield in this instance since this is one
update I
cannot install and do not want to install. Thanks.

Karen, you can selectively forbid specific updates from ever being
installed on your PC (without disabling the Windows Update
faciltity).

You can do this through the 'Custom' button. I have 'Silverlight' and
other MS-nonsense banned from being installed from my PC. You still
get
notifications from newer security updates, but not those you disable.
