Default DVD Writer Trouble

Hi, I hope someone can help me out with this.
I brought a new Samsung DVD Writer SATA. I set it up on my PC.I already had
a combo drive(IDE) and I set both of them up.

The trouble is that this new DVD writer does not recognize blank DVDs and
can't write DVDs. In fact it can only read/writ/RW CDs and read DVDs written
on other PCs and DVD movies etc. Its acting like a combo drive! In My
Computer the drive's icon reads DVD/RW but when I put in a blank and open it,
the properties of the blank disk are shown as 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free when
it should be 4.7 GB free.

In Nero, Windows detects the drive as a combo drive in the start up screen--
the NERO screen only shows the option of create data CD even when I in put in
a blank DVD. The DVDs written thus are unreadable.

Even after removing the older drive this problem persists. I have even got
the drive repaired from the Samsung service centre(they couldn't test it in
front of me)

I don't know whether there is a problem with the drive or will i have to
reinstall XP with the DVD writer plugged in?
