thanks, will double check all connection.
update- did get system to start in VGA mode but when I try and increase
resolution the problem comes back.

Your refresh rate is too high. The video card is sending signals that is
outside the operating range of the monitor.

You should install the driver for the monitor. It will tell the video
card what the optimal refresh rate to use for the monitor you're using at
different resolutions.

I forgot to mention, operating CRT monitors outside of their operating range
can cause permanent damage to the monitor.

you might try pressing
the alt ctl del keys on
the dark desktop.

if you get the task
manager, then launch
new task:

explorer.exe

----------------

in regards to the f8
scenerio.

instead of clicking the
key,

press and hold it down
as soon as the bios
ends its testing upon
boot up and until the
boot menu appears.

Moved system to another room at home and now this is happening.
When winxp starts, the monitor works fine. About 1/2 way through startup the
monitor goes dark and the green 'on' light flashes.
I had to shut down power and restart. scan disk starts and after running
through to 100% and giving detail of scan, monitor goes dark.

Even though monitor does dark, the system keeps starting. I hear the little
MS gingle, the HD keeps running, etc.
The only thing I did was replace the LAN card with a wireless card. When
this started I removed wireless card.

I can't get into SAFE mode. Hit F-8, safe mode and system tries to restart
in normal mode.

Any suggestions please,

This proves what others here have said. When Windows
switches to the high res mode, it's at a resolution and/or
refresh rate that the monitor can't handle.

You haven't said if it's a CRT or LCD monitor. Some CRT
monitors use relays to switch into high res modes. If that's
the case with your's, something in the internal resolution
switching may have been disturbed in the move.

One thing to try is to reinstall the monitor driver/inf file
from safe mode. You may have to press F8 repeatedly
to get the startup options menu.

Do you know the key to press, to get into the BIOS screens ?

Instead of booting into Windows, start the computer and press the key
to enter the BIOS. Then, just let the computer sit for a while,
displaying the BIOS screen.

Does the display continue to work, with the BIOS screen showing ?

If not, it could be a problem with the monitor, or with the power
brick for the monitor. Is the power connector on the
monitor fully seated ?

It is better to test with the BIOS screen, as less stuff gets
hurt when you turn off the PC power at the back.

Update- not sure what happened to the system but I got into VGA mode,
restored system to Saturday and things are working fine. (LCD monitor)
Since I'm not a systems expert, I'm leaving well-enough-along and not trying
to figure out what happened.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

sounds good.

incidentally, double
check for hardware
conflicts,

since you have added
new hardware, ie the
wireless.

for example, if the irq
that was assigned to
the monitor is also being
used by the wireless,
