Default OneDrive update error

My wife's laptop said OneDrive needed updating so away we went to
update it, but it failed with the 0x80040c82 error code. Followed the
instructions here with no success.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-e7c2039ef841

I went in manually to uninstall OneDrive, rebooted the machine and
checked that it is definitely gone, but the install refuses to work.
Anyone seen this problem or got any other ideas?
TIA

Ah, no.

The problem is, the reason it's hard to craft an answer, is because
OneDrive has four different versions, and the software could
either be Win32 for it, or it could be a Metro App.

The flowchart for fixing, may depend on what one is being used.

[lots of advertising]

https://www.zubairalexander.com/blog...your-computer/

Onedrive, before it had these versions, used to get into install
loops, and beat the **** out of the computer. Eventually I think
some code was added so it wouldn't do that more than three or
four times. Then the next day, it would do it again.

I don't recollect there being a separate installer to download.
If it was coming in as a KB (which it probably isn't), you could
get it from the Catalog server and do it by hand. But I doubt
life is that simple.

For Metro Apps there are some commands for removing and installing,
and there's also some stuff in the GUI for the Apps section.
Equivalent to Programs and Features, so you don't have to use
the command line.

The problem space at the moment, is too large to answer, and the OPs
problem might well have resolved on its own by now.

Ah. Thanks. I didn't realise the distinction. This is a work-related
OneDrive so probably the O365 version.

Look for "onedriveonedrive" or "onedriveonedrive.exe" on the
machine. And try that as a search term (in Agent Ransack or Everything.exe,
as the Windows Search isn't likely to find it). I think that *might* be
a Win32 maintenance executable, for dealing with the thing
as a broken App.

When Microsoft made Apps, it did a strange thing. It assigned a
file extension of EXE to the main file. If you open it with
7ZIP (the Swiss Army knife for Windows), it shows "the usual structures"
for a Win32 executable. Except... they're a stub and do nothing.
If you double click an App, the Win32 loader tries to load it, and
the screen "blinks" because the execution time is so short.

int main();
return 0;

Instead, what is inside the file, later in the file structure,
is a manifest of sorts, which details what components make the
App. An "App Loader" needs to examine that and load the App,
based on the manifest. And then you are stuck with figuring out
"OK, what exactly triggers the App Loader to run".

That's why, if you happened to find a "OneDrive.exe", it would
probably be bogus. And... it would not accept command line
arguments. Seeing as "it isn't a real Win32 and is only pretending".
Apps are highly unlikely to accept command line arguments, seeing
as the executable part is "empty", as in the two line pretend code
example.

So when I saw a reference to a "OneDriveOneDrive" executable,
one that accepts a Reset directive, it was my guess that
this was a clever way of saying "this isn't the App one and
it's actually useful".

Progress report. I've found a folder full of all the different versions of
one drive in:
%localuser%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive

It includes the actual OneDrive.exe and OneDriveSetup.exe for each of them.
I've tried a few including the default one dated 2018, but they all do the
same thing. The setup throws the error in my OP and the OneDrive executable
shows the one drive icon on the taskbar, but greyed out and with a line
through it. Hovering the mouse over it brings up a "Updating..." pop-up.
Then it disappears. Clearly it's got itself stuck in an update loop. How to
get out of it?

I've run the one drive reset option and a couple of random msiexc commands
I found. All with no success.

I've also found some logs with little intelligible in there. Most of the
files are ODL files and in the setup\logs folder it seems it is resetting
every minute. The only readable file has error lines about not being able
to delete file and retries 30 times:
"JokeYakLog:\RodOafGad\VineFoxAte\TaxZigPen\WarPew Much\PenFoxRag\MuchGadSea\MuchGadSea.exe"
which looks dodgy but google throws up nothing.

Utterly at a loss as to what's gone wrong here. Microsoft at its most
beautiful worst here :-(

Am tempted to start randomly deleting things now...

First step: which variant of OneDrive are we dealing with? Possible variants
include:

1 ‘personal’ OneDrive delivered as part of Win 10 Home

2 ‘personal’ OneDrive installed with an installer from Deepest Microsoft

3 ‘personal’ OneDrive delivered as part of a home or personal version of
Office365

4 ‘business’ OneDrive delivered as part of Win 10 Pro

5 ‘business’ OneDrive delivered as part of a business or pro version of
Office365

6 ‘education’ OneDrive delivered as part of Win 10 Education

7 ‘education’ OneDrive delivered as part of an education version og
Office365

(warning: many variants of Office365 are now Microsoft365 and may be bundled
with all kinds of things.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365
Confused yet?)

note that there may be other ways to get OneDrive, the above are merely how
I’ve seen it installed. There are differences in the way OneDrive works,
differences in the maximum storage available, and, most important,
differences in the support you’ll get from Microsoft. (Hint: ‘business’
and ‘education’ users may have to contact support at their local
organization, rather than Microsoft, depending on exactly what kind of
agreement there was set up between Microsoft and their organization. Guess
how I know this.)

Second step: what kind of network connection are you using? The 0x80040c82
error often shows up with wireless connections, usually wireless connections
which have a problem. So... first thing, make sure all is well with the
connection. Use an Ethernet connection, restart the wireless access point, do
whatever to ensure that you have a good connection. Turn off proxies, VPNs,
anything of the kind. Yes, I know, there’s no apparent link between
OneDrive and wireless, but, hey, it’s Microsoft, God only knows what
happens deep in the bowels of the Beast of Redmond. You might look he
https://thegeekpage.com/fix-onedrive...0x8004de40-in-
windows-10/ and see if that fixes your problem.

Note: I’m assuming that your problem is with OneDrive on Win 10. There are
different problems with OneDrive on Mac, on iOS, and on Android. I don’t
have Android experience but do have Mac and iOS experience. Want some fun?
Try fixing a ‘education’ OneDrive install problem on iOS when the school
in question has a ‘premier’ account with Microsoft, so that mere users
can’t talk directly to Microsoft support, they have to go through the
school’s support staff.

Scan MuchGadSea.exe on virustotal.com .

It's a substitution code, intended to make a random path,
and being random, isn't likely to be Google-able, as it
was made just for you. However, the payload, whether it's
MuchGadSea.exe or another file in that folder, it can't
run away quite as quickly.

If any (online) scanning tool "seems to malfunction", you
have your answer.

If it is protected by a rootkit, you could try
taking the OS offline and doing the scan from another
OS. Or, using a safety scanner. There's Kaspersky,
Bitdefender, or some flavor of this.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...-protect-my-pc

It could be, that whatever the machine has for AV
protection, is "interfering" with an active infection.
And your Onedrive symptoms are just a side effect.
Such as the MSI subsystem being "busy" with a
malware infection trying to install something.

I went in manually to uninstall OneDrive, rebooted the machine and
checked that it is definitely gone, but the install refuses to work.
Anyone seen this problem or got any other ideas?

May I suggest that you read this helpful article, Chris?

Ah, no.

The problem is, the reason it's hard to craft an answer, is because
OneDrive has four different versions, and the software could
either be Win32 for it, or it could be a Metro App.

The flowchart for fixing, may depend on what one is being used.

Ah. Thanks. I didn't realise the distinction. This is a work-related
OneDrive so probably the O365 version.

If it’s ‘business’ Office/Microsoft365, then the odds are good that
this is the wireless problem.

Slight problem this laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port nor do I have a
suitable USB dongle. I thought it was only Apple kit that did this?

I won't be able to cycle the router until later as my daughter's currently
needing it for WFH.

Onedrive, before it had these versions, used to get into install
loops, and beat the **** out of the computer. Eventually I think
some code was added so it wouldn't do that more than three or
four times. Then the next day, it would do it again.

I don't recollect there being a separate installer to download.

there are _different_ installers, depending on OneDrive flavor.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/micr...drive/download Warning:
Microsoft wants to be helpful, and will redirect you to a page appropriate
for installing a version of OneDrive suitable for your OS.

I went via the OneDrive link when logged into O365. Gives two options.
"Start OneDrive" directs to the URL odopen://launch which doesn't do
anything useful in Firefox nor Edge. The other is a download to
OneDriveSetup.exe which fails with the usual error.

It just popped up in the notifications.

Sounds more and more like the wireless problem.

Nope. Your link above gives me an idea of how to fix it. Maybe.

Good luck...

Thanks. I'll reset the router later and get back to you all.

Note: I’m assuming that your problem is with OneDrive on Win 10.

Yup.

There are
different problems with OneDrive on Mac, on iOS, and on Android. I don’t
have Android experience but do have Mac and iOS experience.

Ironically, I have a Mac for work and OneDrive has been stable as a rock
for me.

Want some fun?
Try fixing a ‘education’ OneDrive install problem on iOS when the school
in question has a ‘premier’ account with Microsoft, so that mere users
can’t talk directly to Microsoft support, they have to go through the
school’s support staff.

Sounds about right.

I've power cycled the router, then laptop and put it and out of flight
mode. OneDrive still not behaving. Grrr. This is beyond a joke. Only
Microsoft can take something that works flawlessly for months on end, then
break it with no fuss and have no way of going back. -(

Sorry, man, I’m all out of ideas, other than contact MS support, which may
or may not be worth the effort. It does seem that you’re not alone in the
problem, so they may fix it. I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath while
waiting, though.

I will say that times I’ve had problems with OneDrive were with Win 10 and
iOS. Win 7 and Mac never gave problems, but as the only Win 7 machines I have
left don’t have OneDrive I can’t say if Win 7 still doesn’t give
problems. It’s actually pretty bad if a Microsoft product works properly on
Macs but not on the current version of Windows.
